Affectionately known as Chilam, Hong Kong actor/singer Julian Cheung makes his comeback to the music scene in 2009 with his sight set on the Hong Kong Coliseum for his proposed first solo concerts next year. His long-awaited new album I Am Chilam comes in a two-disc set, one with 8 new songs and the other a 10-track greatest-hits selection. The new songs include the first plug "You Are Too Kind"; "Collagen" written by Eric Kwok and Wyman Wong; and Taiwan movie Miao Miao theme song Get Together, which is nominated for the Golden Horse Best Original Film Song Award. Chilam also has a Mandarin duet "Loved" with Myolie Wu, plus an updated version of his signature duet "Modern Love Story" featuring girl group Hotcha. The classic hits portion includes such karaoke favorites as "Wish You Well", "Ten Fingers Tightly Locked", "Missing You Like This", and "Forgive My Past".

The Deluxe Edition features a new cover and comes with a bonus DVD with 8 music videos, plus a pair of "I AM" rings.

 Good Comeback Album. Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Chilam has done pretty good on this album, especially in mixing old and new songs into a 2 CD + 1 DVD package. For the price, it's certainly worth it. The new songs are similar in style to his old ones, but he hasn't shown rust in his singing ability. Chilam sings the moderately-paced pop ballads with dramatic emotion. The old songs, especially power ballads like 祝君好 and 原諒我過去, are luckily not overlooked, and the new songs almost all include music videos.

Song commentary:

01. "妳太善良/You Are Too Kind" - 8.5/10. This is the best song of CD1 (the new tracks). Chilam captures the emotion of the song with excellent feeling and with powerful vocals.

03. "情愛現代事故/Modern Love Story" - 7/10. To be honest, his solo version of this song was much, much better. Hotcha can't quite keep up with the song's demanding vocals.

04. "骨膠原/Collagen" - 7.5/10. A strong song, well paced, with a good melodic sequence combined with solid lyrics. Easy on the ears.

05. "巨星之路/Road to a Superstar" - 7.5/10. Well written song here, but Chilam's vocals on this song aren't as good as on the other main tracks on the album.


Overall album rating - 7/10. Chilam's a great singer, but his songs are extremely one dimensional. A friend of mine complained about the repetitiveness of the album, but it was merely the similarity between all the songs, sharing almost the same style, pace, and vocal range. An album that leaves a lot of depth to cover for Chilam for his next compilation.

I've just got it today after 3 weeks since ordering, so excited.

In general, the design is interesting with the grey transparent plastic cover and the lyric book is designed well as well. The cover, the CDs and the book create an uniqueness music message, "Chilam".

The fist CD, which include 8 new songs, represents Chilam, powerful, deeper, diversified music. Overall, it includes nice melodies and emotional sound. Cloud in the sky, Road of a Superstar and by other people are my most favourite songs. For the lyrics, I just guess them through the music but can not really got them, hopefully I can understand later.

The second CD, the old songs, includes some of his classics. Personally, he has other lovely songs, for instance Maiden's prayer.

So, it's a worth Christmas gift. Welcome to Chilam's fan club!!!

Wish all the best for his concert next year and looking forward to the DVD live version of the concert!
