Professional Review of "I am not an Angel"

"I Am Not an Angel" is Na Ying's first full-length release since leaving EMI for Warner Music. Her many fans have waited anxiously for this release, wondering how changing labels mid-career would effect Na Ying's sound, her songs, and her image. Well, the wait is over, and Na Ying has never sounded better! "I Am Not an Angel" has everything we love about Na Ying's music-- strong, passionate vocals, unforgettable melodies, moving lyrics we relate to. It also features things we've never heard or seen before on a Na Ying album— a modern cutting-edge sound created through the blending of rock, R&B, and jazz influences, world class sound engineering by the very talented Jim Lee and Rigby Ju, the most gorgeous album insert Na Ying's face has ever graced, and on and on. An album is never the result of just one person's effort and this album is no exception. Warner Music and Na Ying assembled a sizeable group of seasoned musicians, lyricist, and sound artists— Wu Bai, Zhang Ya Dong, Lin Xi-- to create ten songs we'll never forget. Highlights include "A Smile in Passing," a contemplative, contemporary torch song featuring a modern mix of guitar and orchestra that works well to reinforce, but not overpower the strong melody and Na Ying's clear voice. Track two, the album's title song, is a down-tempo, haunting, ballad whose lyric "I'm not an angel and I don’t understand your heaven" sung against a ghostly guitar, effectively conveys the detached mood of the song. Also of note is the ninth track, "Seize Every Moment" composed by the immensely talented Beijing-based composer and producer Zhang Ya Dong- creator of such hits as Faye Wong's "Love Strangers Only," "Your Happy So I’m Happy," and "Suffocate." During a recent episode of the Channel V concert series "Mian Dui Mian," featuring Na Ying, a very perceptive fan said he enjoyed watching Na Ying mature as a musician with the release of each new album. My sentiments exactly. |

There are a couple of good songs, mainly tracks 2, 9 and 10. I have to say that she is influenced by Faye; the way the words are pronounced and the style of the song pretty much resemble Faye's style. It is evident in Track 3, where she pronouces the words differently and how she "breathes" really fast at the end (Faye's signature styles). I apologize for focusing my attention toward Faye, but when i listen to these songs, I think Faye could/would do a better job. Na Ying's voice isn't fit to sing gloomy songs (like 2 or 9); i think she does a better job singing soft ballads, like track 10. She did a wonderful job in track 10, and a terrible job in tracks 3 or 9. she did a good job in track 4, which is kinda like R&B. I do like the album overall and it is better than her previous albums, but she still needs to develop her own style and character. |

This is the first album of hers that I bought. I don''t know about her past albums, but I have to admit that this one is real good. I really enjoy almost all the songs, and have been listening to it since the day I bought it. This album is very sentimental and slow. If you like slow, sentimental and good music sung by great singer, you shouldn't miss this one. |

Sorry.... I have to start by saying that Na Ying is my favorite female pop singer ever. hehe But seriously though, this album is great. It's definately somewhat of a departure from her earlier work, but it's a pretty subtle change, so of course it's still fantastic. I gave it a 9 because though it's a great album, it's not quite up to par with her last one in MY opinion. Hope she keeps up the good work and keeps on growing as an artist; and I'll keep buying everything she puts out! |

It is so nice that Na Ying finally tried to sing different type of songs. This album is still mainly love song, but like not her old style albums, which uses one tone for most of the songs in the album. Of course, she performed all the song very well! |
