SOUPS, QUEENS, AND CANDY: SIMPLY SMASHING
This is one of those discs that sounds progressively better with each subsequent listen. The opening ditty "Teddy Bear at Home", as well as the video, is a hoot and instantly pleasing, especially to younger audiences. A remixed version (#10) is included: more subdued and dreamy with Charlie Brown cool-style piano. "Our Future" (#2), composed by Gigi herself, harbours an emotional chorus sung with marked sincerity catapulting the song above its already skilled writing. The album's title track (#3) is a curious and effective blend; it is both introspective and carefree. A very catchy fourth track, complete with hooks and loops, precedes "Snow, Snow" (#5), which encompasses a sweet bass line, a pleasant beat, splashes of strings, and beautiful vocals. The unusual title of "Chicken Soup Vase" (#6) proves to be the album's best track, however. The song is structured in a suspenseful build-up to a compelling, rewarding, and irresistible chorus that Gigi releases like a sling-shot, with heated conviction that she won't submit to being a vase (a Chinese term for a vacuous bimbo girl). The album mellows out with the relaxing seventh song. And the eighth has a nostalgic flavour beginning like an early Abba ballad and, like "Chicken Soup Vase", converges into a booming chorus. The ninth ("Cartoon Queen") is an experimental classical symphonic beat-laden concoction. I love the popping melody of the chorus, suitable, among other things, to be programmed as the ring tone in any mobile phone. "I Live in Flat 7A" closes with Gigi talking to her "puddy-tat"; a beautiful piano opens "I am Called Cotton Candy", but, rather than a carnival, it rings with an ambiance more in tune with a 1930's Shanghai cafe. Gigi's voice, unlike the traditional Chinese style of high-pitched nasal squeaks and whines, still carried by many modern popstars, which many find irritating, is soft and smooth as is the music that accompanies it in this excellent production. She is well deserving of the $55 million HK dollars she has earned, with skyrocketing success, so far in 2002.

I Live In 7A
When Gigi first came out during 1996, I wasn't too impressed by her voice. It seemed as if she was breathing more than singing. But when Gigi released "Suddenly This Summer" last year, I was really impressed with her voice. Not only does Gigi have a great voice now, she does a great job singing in both Mandarin and Cantonese! In "I Live In 7A", you can really tell that Gigi put a lot of effort in it. There are a variety of songs. My favorites would be track #1-#6.

Excellent Overall Performance
I think Gigi's new album is better than Joey's new album. My favourite tracks in Gigi's new album is track 2 and 6. It's great to see that Gigi is improving with every new album that she puts out.

Gigi's Best Album Yet
I've been listening to Gigi's music for years now. This is certainly her best album yet. It offers a variety of genres ranging from heartaching love ballads to Gigi's typical cheerful delights such as her hit single: "Home-Sweet-Home-Bear." I don't usually do reviews, but this is an exception. Buy it & Enjoy! -k26
