The nineteen year old son of a German emigrant returns to Germany in April 1945 with an educational unit of the Red Army. He feels like a stranger in his homeland. Based partly on autobiographical elements from the life of director Konrad Wolf, this film became one of the most significant movies dealing with the chaos and desolation in Germany in 1945.
