If You Are The One 2: Love & Marriage (DVD) (US Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Feng Xiaogang's If You Are The One rocked China's box office with a record-breaking take of more than RMB340 million in December 2008. Two years later, the no.1 blockbuster director in China reunites stars Ge You and Shu Qi in the highly anticipated sequel co-written with best-selling novelist Wang Shuo, whose famous works include the novel Jiang Wen's In the Heat of the Sun was adapted from. Reprising their roles as an unlikely couple who are more than friends but not yet lovers, Ge and Shu show greater chemistry in the second act of Feng's profound, humorous, and often touching exploration of romance and marriage which also finds time to ponder on issues of life and death. To give the sequel's starpower a further boost, Feng also brings in Sun Honglei (Forever Enthralled), Yao Chen (Sophie's Revenge), Liao Fan (Assembly), Shao Bing (Let the Bullets Fly), and gorgeous Taiwan drama queen Ady An. The romantic dramedy proved to be a hit with critics and moviegoers alike, grossing over RMB420 million to surpass the original.

After the soul-searching trip to Hokkaido, Xiaoxiao (Shu Qi) has gotten over her bitter affair with Mr. Fang, somewhat disillusioned with romantic relationships. But one man still gives her mixed feelings: Qin Fen (Ge You) is a considerate and funny guy for sure, yet he's too moody and childish to be the man she wants to walk down the aisle with. Although Xiaoxiao has tried to convince herself that Qin is her Mr. Right, she's too conscious of the difference between liking and loving. On the other hand, Qin is pretty sure he wants to end his bachelorhood with Xiaoxiao. In a bid to find out whether they really suit each other, the two rent a villa in the scenic Sanya to begin their "trial marriage"...

Stick with "If You Are The One 1" Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
The first "If You Are The One" movie was such an effervescent delight that I approached this sequel with trepidation. Director Feng Xiaogang should have left well enough alone; this sequel is an ill-conceived mess. It depicts pampered people leading aimless lives in glossy surroundings while mouthing platitudes about life, love, and loss. It is the only film I can recall in which a character touts the great wisdom of Karl Marx's poisonous writings amidst a plethora of capitalist product placements. (No, really, I'm not joking!)

The film plays more like a series of half-thought-out sketches unskillfully stitched together, than like a coherent whole. It opens with nebbishy middle-aged rich guy Qin Fen (Ge You) proposing marriage to his lovely young girlfriend Xiaoxiao (Shu Qi). Xiaoxiao balks at the proposal; she's not yet ready for marriage and not yet sure that Qin Fen is the right man for her. Instead, they choose to have a 'trial marriage', meaning they will shack up together for a while in Qin Fen's breathtakingly lovely Hainan retreat and see how things go. Before they get to Hainan, the story veers to a splashy 'divorce ceremony' that resembles a wedding of minor European royalty. Qin Fen oversees the divorce of his best friend (Sun Honglei) from his beautiful bride (Yao Chen). Then Qin Fen and Xiaoxiao are off to Hainan, where Qin Fen sabotages their relationship by being a jealous, needy pain in the neck. The 'trial marriage' is a flop and both parties get on with moping through their lives.

Qin Fen somehow lands a gig hosting a TV travel program, a task for which he has no apparent training or skills. Then Qin Fen's best friend is found to have malignant melanoma, leading to a 20 minute detour on death and dying. At the friend's 'farewell ceremony', Qin Fen and Xiaoxiao meet again and the dying friend tries to put them back together. By this point in the disjointed and unpersuasive film, I no longer cared whether the couple were able to work things out.

The moral of the story: Don't make a sequel unless you have a really good idea for it; Feng Xiaogang had only ill-assorted notions. On a positive note, the film's cast delivers deft performances and the cinematography of Hainan is luscious. I'm ready to book a vacation there right now. And perhaps that's the real bottom line of this film: There was money to be made from the Hainan tourism bureau and from product placements and Feng Xiaogang chose to cash in.
