Complete dissapointment!!
|
After reading the Chinese discription and understand that there will be 6 different movies in the DVD, I expect it'll be interesting movies which some of them would at least run for more than 30 minutes. I'm also a Ji Jin Hee fan and bought this DVD because he is in one of the movie. Unfortunately, Ji Jin Hee only appeared in the first movie that was only 10 minutes long. Ji Jin Hee's story was an interesting one even though it left you with a lot of unanswered questions. For this, I give this DVD half star. I wish that his movie was 110 minutes long and cut the other movies short or no need to incule them at all in this DVD. The reason why I don't like the other 5 movies is because there were extremely far from what I would call "interesting movies"!! The rest was quite depressing to watch. I would call these movies a documentary type than a movie. IF I CAN TURN BACK THE TIME, I WILL NOT BUY THIS DVD and use the money to buy something else. |

If you were me
| This dvd was a complete disappointment! Bought this dvd even though there were no reviews, because I am a great fan of Ji Jin Hee. I expected a 110 minute story with Ji Jin Hee as the leading actor. Instead, this dvd is comprised of six short stories, and Ji Jin Hee is only in a short 10 minute segment and does not appear in any of the other stories. The only description of this dvd was in Chinese, which was "Greek" to me. So, Buyer Beware! |

Great film for Koreaophiles
|
This is an anthology of six films about human rights, all with a very Korea-specific focus. It opens with a funny film about a class of young women in a vocational school and the relentless pressure on them to be slim and pretty. I say "funny" because, to me, the portrayal of the pressure on these girls at first appeared to be exaggerated for comic effect... but towards the end I was left wondering. The director personalises the issue with an amusing surprise in the closing credits. There is a direct and moving film about a disabled man with references to the sit-down protests about access to public transport that occurred in Seoul. Another film includes graphic detail of a child being subjected to painful mouth surgery to improve English pronunciation. The short piece successfully avoids piling the blame on the parents, illuminating the pressure from society that has influenced them. It also widens the issue to the pressure on children to learn English, with some touching quotes from the kids themselves which will strike a chord with many. The closing film in the sequence was the highlight for me. Nepalese people look sufficiently Korean to fool Korean people into thinking -- assuming, in fact -- that they are Korean. "Never Ending Peace and Love" is the story of Chandra, an illegal foreign worker who gets lost on the way to working at a factory in Korea. Unable to speak Korean but apparently a Korean peasant woman to those who try to help, things rapidly get out of control as this "anomoly" passes through Korean society. Shot mainly in the first person, I found this film utterly unforgettable. The remaining two films are less direct, and as a non film buff I may not be qualified to comment! There is a very stylish film set in a futuristic Korean apartment block (although since Korea changes so quickly, it may be a period drama by the time you read this). A boy is sent out from his home to collect salt from neighbours as a traditional punishment for persistent bed-wetting. Neighbours unanimously pile the pressure on him and refuse to contribute, except for one man who rebels against the system. But the application of the traditional punishment in this hyper-modern environment has an unintended consequence. Finally, there is a ghost story set in a car park from which I was unable to unpick any relevant meaning! The theme running through the films is, in my mind, the regimen of Korean society, pressure and relentless modernisation. This is enough to bring at least five of the films together into a coherent anthology -- certainly the most moving collection of short films I have ever seen. It may be a little less enjoyable to those less interested in the issues, but I think there is something here for everyone. |
