Based on Ko Woo Yung's best-selling comic book, this enchanting tale about a chivalrous outlaw who becomes the symbol of the oppressed during the late Joseon era has left an indelible mark on Korean culture throughout the years, spawning numerous TV drama and film adaptations including SBS's 2008 fusion period drama featuring heartthrob Lee Jun Ki and MBC's upcoming 2009 interpretation starring Unhindered Highkick's rising star Jung Il Woo.

While Lee Jun Ki's Iljimae sees him as a charming, gregarious swashbuckling hero, Jang Dong Gun's 1993 version sticks to a more traditional approach by portraying its titular character as a reclusive loner who struggles between good and evil. Jang's perfectly chiseled face and brooding charm radiate throughout the series as he whisks the audience off on a breathtaking string of adventures. In what is to be his first and only appearance in a TV period drama, Jang collaborates with actress Yeom Jung Ah (Emperor Wang Gun) igniting chemistry both on and off the screen. Though produced in 1993, the drama features deftly choreographed fight scenes (sleek even for today's standard) and contains all the right ingredients of a heroic saga.
