Professional Review of "Ima aisuruhitoto kurashiteimasuka"
This professional review refers to Love Now (AKA: Changing Partners) (DVD) (Limited Edition) (Korea Version)

Modern relationships come under scrutiny again in Korean director Jung Yoon Soo's Love Now (also known by the equally appropriate title Changing Partners), a romantic comedy which revolves around life, love and infidelity. Boasting a top cast and promising a realistic look at the problems faced by people who have perhaps married unwisely, the film attempts to tell a bittersweet though amusing tale based around the fact that for many people, following their heart may not always be the easiest thing to do. The set up is pretty familiar, following two married couples: rich lighting designer So Yeo (Han Chae Young, recently in Wild Card) and her workaholic husband Young Joon (Lee Dong Gun, also in the comedy My Boyfriend Is Type B), and loudmouth fashion designer Yoo Na (Uhm Jung Hwa, from the similarly themed Seducing Mr Perfect) and her laidback man Min Jae (Park Yong Woo, World of Silence). The two cross paths when Yoo Na is hired as a fashion consultant for Young Joon, and when So Yeo and Min Jae hook up during a chance meeting in Hong Kong. Sparks fly and the two naughty couples are soon flirting their way to a game of musical partners through such romantic activities as a drunken boxing match in a bar and a dreamlike barefoot run though the softly lit back streets of Hong Kong (always a lovely idea). Needless to say, complications ensue as the two affairs threaten to turn all of their lives upside down, with the question looming large as to who everyone will end up with by the time the credits roll. Although Love Now is a film which styles itself as having something to say about modern relationships, it never tries to explore the subject in the same depth as for example Yoo Ha's thought-provoking Marriage is a Crazy Thing. To be fair, this isn't too much of a criticism, and as a contemporary romantic comedy the film ticks all the right boxes and certainly does have more substance than many of its peers, although it would have benefited from a little more fleshing out of its characters. As things stand, the four are a fairly obvious bunch, painted in very broad strokes, with Jung content to rely on the odd subplot to provide insight, such as a suspiciously superfluous and underdeveloped blackmail thread involving Yoo Na's unseen sister which only crops up as a rather obvious device for Young Joon to show his sensitive side and manliness at the same time. Still, for the genre, the film works well enough, mainly since the characters are all pretty likeable, and the viewer does get drawn into the plot, even if the ending is clearly signposted from the first frame. It has to be said that the film would be a lot more romantic if it weren't for the fact that all concerned are already married, and as such it breezes by with a casual lack of morals, even more so due to the fact that director Jung shows the two extramarital affairs developing in tandem, ensuring minimal feelings of viewer guilt. Similarly, the film only really tells one side of the story, focusing almost entirely on the excitement of new romance and never going into detail about the problems with the characters' existing marriages. Whilst there is something to be said for encouraging people to follow their heart rather than languishing in loveless relationships, this does diffuse some of the potential dramatic tension, as the characters' approaching indiscretions are blame free and never in any doubt. Indeed, the film gets more interesting after the first bouts of hanky panky, as the viewer waits to see just how long it will take them all to catch on to their respective spouse's cheating ways. Entertainingly, this turns out to be very long indeed, despite the fact that their adultery is anything but subtle, involving constant text messaging, midnight phone calls, long, lingering glances, and inappropriate bathroom incidents. Love Now is pretty frank for this kind of film, with a fair bit of sex and nudity, though Jung gives things a polished, glossy look and never lets the drama get too sleazy. This definitely gives the film a boost in terms of believability, and the tastefully shot scenes of coupling do add a certain air of realism and maturity. Probably its biggest flaw is that although well constructed, at nearly two hours the film is a little on the long side, and the middle section in particular tends to drag in places. However, Jung does manage to keep things moving along at a bright and breezy pace for the most part, and wisely injects a good amount of light-hearted humour into the proceedings. Although this prevents things from getting gloomy or too melodramatic, for which he certainly deserves praise, the increasingly contrived situations could perhaps have done with a little more in the way of laughs, especially the rather farcical denouement. Even without this, Love Now is perfectly enjoyable, and is one of the better romantic comedies to have come from Korea over the last couple of years. Although it does represent to some extent a bit of a missed opportunity for more a more searching examination of modern morality, it certainly provides all that the genre fan could ask for and makes for enjoyable viewing. by James Mudge - BeyondHollywood.com |

Glossy tale of adultery

"Love Now" succeeds largely because of the starpower of its brilliant and attractive cast. Wife Yoo Na and her hubby Min Jae are a mismatched pair. Yoo Na, a fashion consultant for a high-end men's clothier, is a hard-charging, aggressive Type A personality. Min Jae is laid-back mid-level hotel manager. Yoo Na is frustrated with her husband's lack of drive. She thinks that she sees that drive in Young Joon (Lee Dong Gun), a freshly-promoted, cold-blooded CEO of a construction company who Yoo Na is outfitting. Min Jae thinks he finds a more sympathetic soul in Young Joon's wife, So Yeo (Han Chae Young), with whom Young Joon spends time when coincidence finds them both on business trips in Hong Kong. Uhm Jung Hwa is a jaw-dropping presence in this film, a sexy, full-bodied force of nature. Han Chae Young is an almost impossibly lovely revelation. Each of the four lead actors manage to create interesting, vivid characters about whom we come to care even as we watch them engaging in infidelities seemingly without any moral conscience. The film's emotional impact is undercut by the fact that these two marriages seem so ill-matched from the outset. Nonetheless, the tension of these illicit relationships builds to a clever and satisfying climax. Recommended for a mature audience. |

worth it

I enjoy watching this movie. Han Chae-young was so beautiful in this one as I have become a fan of her now. She did a good job. I didn't realize she was in My Girl and even Autumn In My Heart. Anyway, this movie is defintely better than most Korean movies of recent. And the DVD packaging is superb for this release. |

This movie is not very catchy to me at all until the end, besides what's included with the dvd is nice and all. The storyline could've been better if they make the 2 couple that stayed behind slept together, just to make everything even out with their spouse that did. This movie is not worth watching, don't get me wrong, this is just my opinion. |

Affairs of the Heart
|
Sometimes its totally the movie that is the focal point with me (which is what it should be, I guess), but other times its the delight of who is actually appearing in it. It should be a balance of both, but this time I really enjoyed this film for the latter reason (and why I bought this DVD), as Jung Hwa Uhm and Yong Woo Park are getting to be firm favorites of mine, and give two enjoyable performances here. Alongside them (literally) are Chae Yong Han and Dong Geon Lee, who help to make this film about four career professionals (and 2 couples ready to change partners) who are all romantically starved by being with their better halves - you get here a quite entertaining and interesting tale of extra martial affairs. If anyone who watched and enjoyed the recent movie "Seducing Mr Prefect", with Jung Hwa's class act there, I can strongly recommend this, as Jung Hwa's vibrant character and dizziness in her role here, is similarly funny and entertaining. And she goes across all the emotion spectrum again! She comes out with some retaliating classic lines, too (which I know are better in Korean, but I have to use the crutch of English subbies), that suits her charactered humor. I liked the bit when Yoon Na accuses Young Joon of using too much English word play in her sentences, as she tries to woo him (professional at this stage) as her business client, and of then her retaliation to his laconic attitude. I won't spoil it and say any more, but this film is all Jung Hwa style to a tee - playing the woman scorned and taking no prisoners! Especially with her 'boxing match' stand off with Young Joo! Likewise, the ever increasingly likable Yong Woo is on form here in his laid back and amiable manner, as the hotel manager Min Jae, as he woos Young Joo's wife So Yeo, when they meet in Hong Kong. Sensitive. Although this is another cheating in relationships movie, its far less cavalier in the sort of cheating mode of recent similar movies, and more of a 'finding the right partner that is more suitable' type - by these couple's initial marriage concerns being seemingly at a cul-de-sac of no horizons! But lessons are learned in all of this, and the story balances up the sensitive issues of the characters straying and cheating in the first place. The couplings learn, in fact, more about the hidden feelings of their spouses, by the emotions brought to the surface by the affairs. Its difficult to actually tsk at their boundary breaking actions, here too, as Young Joon shows hardly any attention to his wife So Yeo, and Yoo Na constantly demands that Min Jae should be more higher in his business status. Which is all fuel for an affair, by the looks of it here. Its a bit steamy in places, though - considering its '18' tag, but actually these scenes of passion (which are only two scenes) aren't exactly overt as some Korean films can be, and are humorously paralleled (especially with Yoo Na and Young Joon) to ease any embarrassment factor. The packaging to this DVD is nice too! Its a digi-pack two disk set that is housed in a gorgeous slip case with a nice set of postcards enclosed, that are the size of the DVD slip case. One thing with the packaging, though, is that it states there is only Korean subtitles to the film, but panic ye not, as there are also good English subbies, for those who appreciate them! Its all worth it, this - a good film, good overall performance and one great 'present giving' DVD set with nice case and postcards. Recommended to all romantics and especially for anyone who enjoyed Jung Hwa in "Seducing Mr Perfect". You'll love her in this! |
