An intimate gathering of 10,000 people.
On a cold February night in 2009, I stepped into the Hong Kong Coliseum for my first Cheer Chen concert experience. I've listened to the singer-songwriter's music since her 2002 Groupies album, but didn't get a chance to catch her in concert until six and a half years later. Having listened to her music for years, I didn't expect a folk singer like Cheer to perform in a venue as large as the Coliseum. The demand is surely there - her shows at Taipei Arena reportedly sold out in hours, and the Hong Kong show I attended was full as well - but her intimate musical style doesn't quite fit the extravagance these large venues offer. However, watching the show again on DVD (which captures one of the Taiwan shows) reminds me why it was one of the best concerts I attended in 2009.

Chen and her concert crew attempt to compensate for the loss in intimacy with animated segments shown on a large screen above the stage. Opening with the first two tracks from her album Immortal, Cheer indirectly informs her audience that the concert will be focused on the album. In fact, she ended up performing nine of the eleven songs from the album during the concert, leaving me even more disappointed that the ethereal Complex, my favorite song from the album, was one of the songs left out of the playlist.

Cheer ultimately doesn't really take advantage of the overall expanded space, spending the first half of the concert on a stage with limited lighting in a series of mellow songs like Jealousy and Take Away. The set would work perfectly in a bar gig with a smaller audience, but it instead creates a long lull when played in the Taipei show (with a similar effect in the Hong Kong show as well).

The show's climax, however, does come by the second half of the concert, when Cheer picks up her own camera to capture her own images of the concert during the lively performance of 1234567. Without even knowing that her fan-anointed nickname is "Teacher Chen", I found out how devoted her fans are when everyone in the audience began singing the choruses of the songs, ranging from relatively recent hits like The Purpose of Traveling to even classics like Would I? and Let Me Think for a Bit. The appeal of seeing Cheer in such a large setting slowly becomes obvious over this section, with the fans standing up and getting into sing-along mode for almost every song. The spectacle of seeing the audience members knowing the songs from beginning to end was nearly as great as the spectacle onstage.

And of course, there was Cheer herself. She may not be the most energetic performer around, but she compensates by retaining the pitch-perfect gentle voice that has become her signature. Even through the slower sections of the concert, Cheer's vocal performance remains the selling point of the show. The fish skin tattoo that runs the length of her left arm isn't exactly the image Cheer's voice would conjure up though.

Unfortunately, the DVD version of the concert left out some songs from the Hong Kong show, including fan favorite I'd Still Be Lonely. However, that's no excuse to miss seeing how one of Taiwan's best female artists manages to give an arena packed with 10,000 fans the aura of an intimate college campus show.

Immortal: Chen's best performances to date Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The emphasis of this DVD performance should be on the word 'TOUR', as it is not a performance set on a single stage. Rather, it is a compilation of the best performances of Chen's 2009 Immortal tour.

That is not to say that the flow of the performances are awkwardly spliced together; the editing is very clean and the compilation of acts do come together in a very seamless manner.

The only thing preventing me from giving this DVD set a perfect score is the unnecessary use of overlays. On some of the early tracks, there is an overlay of non-concert-related imagery on top of what we're really trying to watch. These tracks end up looking more like music videos rather than a live stage performance.

Apart from some bad post production choices, the performances themselves are nothing less than what you would expect from Chen. All of the performers add life to the show and the guys in the background don’t go unnoticed. All of the elements which made up these great shows are here, including a nice nod to ‘Guitar Hero’.

Disc 2 is a nice ‘backstage’ look of the gigs. Inside, outside and what happens when they’re not onstage.

Visually and musically, Chen and her crew have delivered one damn amazing tour. It is truly a feast for the fans and showcases her best live performances to date. It has so many more layers compared to her previous live DVD. The ‘Immortal Tour’ really does deserve repeated viewing.

I have bought many live performance DVDs in the past and can honestly say this DVD set is worth picking up and does have repeated viewing value. 9/10
