Immortal (US Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

The New York of 2095 retains some of its past majesty, such as the Empire State Building, and many other skyscrapers. But the skyline is principally dominated by a huge floating pyramid that has appeared, apparently sent by ancient Egyptian Gods. This is the scenario that director Enki Bilal sets for his film, IMMORTAL, which was among the first to shoot actors playing out their entire roles against a blue screen, then depositing them in a computer-generated environment in post-production. The pyramid has appeared in the skyline so the Gods can rid themselves of Horus (Thomas M. Pollard), who scours Manhattan for a suitable human body to inhabit. As he searches for a mate, Horus's life is irrevocably thrown together with a strange, blue-haired girl who is embarking on a quest that mirrors the hero's own. A sci-fi epic that resembles genre favorites such as THE FIFTH ELEMENT and THE MATRIX, Bilal based the action on his own comic strips, producing an innovative, action-packed movie in the process.

4 stars out of 5 -- "Not since BLADE RUNNER has a bleak future been so immersive and convincing in its construction." - Grant, Kempster (Ultimate DVD Critic), Ultimate DVD, 07/01/2006

Better than the USA DVD Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This R3 HK DVD is much better than the USA DVD. The video quality is a lot sharper and cleaner. It features full bit rate DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, while the USA only had 1/2 bit rate DTS and Dolby. Video was encoded near the maximum rate, like SuperBit. It doesn't have any extras, but the presentation is phenonemanl. I liked the movie when I saw the USA DVD, but the quality wasn't that great. This DVD was much more enjoyable.

Note: there are several parts of this movie where characters speak in different languages. The gods talk to each other in Egyptian, the alien creature with a hammer head speaks its own language, and two characters speak French at the end. You have to turn on the subtitles manually in these sections. The USA DVD was similar, only it just had closed captions for the hearing impaired. It's a little annoying, but once you get used to it, you won't need the subtitles.

Great Movie! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This movie was an excellent adaptation of Enki Bilal's work onto the screen. Anyone familiar with his artwork and illustrated stories will appreciate this combination of live acting and digital animmation. The story is derived from the "Nikopol Trilogy", which can still be purchased from most large book suppliers, if anyone would like to familiarize themselves with the format. I really enjoyed it and advise it to anyone interested in sci-fi which is a little avant-garde. It reminded me a little of "Heavy Metal" and "Blade Runner". The story if reflected on will provoke some thoughtful ideas about society and what really makes us what we are, and about cultural clash of old and new ideas.
