Professional Review of "In Control (CD+DVD)"
|
Kary Ng is known as one of the more promising young stars of Hong Kong pop. Starting out as the "talented member" of girl pop collective Cookies, she was later fitted with the image of a rock singer as the lead singer of the band Ping Pung, despite lacking a suitably strong voice to carry the requisite energy of the genre. Since her first solo album With a Boy Like You, Ng has been trying slowly to find a suitable musical style. Arriving a year and a half after that debut, Ng's second solo album, In Control, shows her making good progress, but the young singer still has ways to go before fully maturing into a true pop star. Ng's mid-range vocal is hard to pick songs for, especially when her inability to deliver a powerful high note automatically rules out rock and R&B. Instead, Ng's high range tends to be in a higher pitch, which could easily be mistaken for a lack of energy or a reliance of falsettos on her part. This is apparent in the opening track "Mountain Song", a duet with R&B wonder boy Justin Lo, written by Jerald of former Swing fame. Ng's part in the song is at a pitch where she ends up sounding like she's singing in falsetto for the majority of the time. As a result, the two may be singing the same melody, but they sound like they're singing different songs. With Lo standing out in his choice genre, "Mountain Song" ends up becoming a satisfactory R&B song that would work better as a part of Lo's albums, rather than starting off In Control. However, the album quickly regains its footing with "Going on Separate Ways" (Track 2), which exemplifies Ng's better handling of the R&B genre. "Excess Pressure" (Track 3), meanwhile, is a masterful contribution from one of Hong Kong pop's premier ballad writers, Dennie Wong. In the style of the classic Hong Kong pop ballad, Wong crafts a simple two-act verse and chorus structure with an elegant yet simple melody for a winning karaoke-friendly pop song. Despite substituting a real bridge with a weak American Idol-style scream, "Excess Pressure" no doubt goes down as one of Ng's best singles, though its lyrics about getting too attached to a significant other seems too inconsequential for its own good. On the other hand, Wong's other contribution to In Control, "Losing Control" (Track 9), is a solid but unspectacular side track in the style of the mid-beat rock ballad, showing again Ng's lack of energy when singing in that particular genre. The more interesting tracks of In Control are neither ballad nor R&B, but rather fast dance songs. Among the three songs hailing from different production teams, Jerald's contribution, "Let Me Go" (Track 4), is the most intriguing on paper. The song is produced in the fashion of a retro 70s dance number, and Ng performs "Let Me Go" in a perfunctory manner, though her delivery and the melody end up being the uninteresting aspects of the track. In "Control" (Track 5) and "Mr. Sorry" (Track 8), Ng finally loosens up a bit with playful vocals and energetic arrangements that prove to be suitable for her seemingly out-of-breath delivery. In Control doesn't qualify as a particularly outstanding album because of its abundance of the usual mishmash of Hong Kong pop genres. However, it marks a significant improvement for Ng as she begins to hone into the right vocal range. Despite her previous efforts to find a non-pop musical niche, Ng is most comfortable in the listener-friendly pop world. With further effort, Ng may eventually develop a more mature voice that carries her to a longer career as a pop star (with the right choice of songs, of course). Overall, In Control is surprisingly solid as a transitional album, but it remains only a preview of things to come rather than a breakthrough. by Kevin Ma |

WONDERFUL

i always loved kary and her great vocal range and trying new and different musical styles this cd is the same the last cd was more on the rock side..with a few catchy karaoke canto pop this cd..she completely change her style to a more hip hop, r&b dancing lady with less karaoke yet strong canto music all of her tracks were well done..each made a great impact on me track 1 - love her duet with justin..their vocals blend very well together..it's a very light-hearted hip hop jam..and i love the english part in the middle..it's not so rapping..but just fast paced the overall track flow is nicely organized too after the finishing of a hip hop jam moves on to track 2 - a slow hip hop jam..this perhaps is my favourite track in the cd...she has a wide vocal range..beginning with low notes..then singing higher and higher at the chorus..this song also gives a little bit of a karaoke feel..so it's highly catchy and memorable track 3 - slow typical canto song..but not much on the karaoke side cause the melody doesn't have that commerical catchy-ness..but it's still a wonderful song with nice lyrics - about a girl who's realizing she's been pushing her boyfriend too much..hoping that he will forgive her...and also..this song is made to show off her vocals..it's very very high and her voice carries it well w/no squeekiness..very well done..i heard her sing live for this song too..it's right on tune..no off keys at all..this shows how greatly improved she is track 4 - fast track..sang all in english..this is more on the disco/techno side rather than the hip hop side..love the beat that made it very catchy track 5 - at first when you listen..you seem a bit on the 'uhhh' side..but after a few times..it's so catchy and the bass gives the spark to the song..another fast paced..heavily based on the hip hop side..it has a heavy bass beat..repeated throughout the song..and she sings with great emotion here as well..rapping in the middle..catchy chorus..everything well done track 6/7 - slow jams..more a bit on the karaoke side..both outstanding as it once again shows her great vocal range track 8 - another hip hop fast song..this is catchy as well..it really shows how kary is trying to try new things..changing her style of music and improving her vocal ability as well as her dancing track 9 - a very special different song..love the piano intro and how the melody had a lot of 'echo-ing' lines...it also has a rock based chorus...it's hard to describe this song..cause it's so..different and new..i just really enjoyed it track 10 - slowing down the cd with a slow jam..once again showing her great vocal range this cd is definitely worth the time to listen to not only kary is getting prettier..sexier and turning more into a lady but her music style has greatly changed..her dancing has improved..she has new collaborations with different artists and composers 10/10! |

Just a bare pass!
|
I pay more attention to this singer after seeing great promotion of her by the Gold Label Co., and bought her cd. But after listening to it I feel sorry to have to say that at present Kary Ng is not ready to soar yet. She has a voice but the quality is not fine. She tries to put sentiment into her songs but then it results in strigent note projection. She can sing a medium high range but the voice lacks timbre or elasticity. There is no real passion in it, either! I believe she can make some progress if she works hard for two or three years. Even then, she is the best among the four remaining "Cookies"! There is no doubt about it. |

10/10!
| i really love this album of hers, even though i think her debut album was stronger in terms of song choice. kary's voice is indeed strong enough to sing different genres of songs, be it pop, rock, ballad, or even hiphop. in my opinion, this album is a compilation of various genres which displays kary's versatility in singing. especially loved her duet with justin, as well as tracks 2, 5, 7 and 8! |

Kary can definitely sing.
| Kary Ng can definitely sing, i especially like Track2. Otherwise, i have actually heard the entire album, and can't say i really like all her songs, only no.2. Although i didn't really enjoy the songs, i really liked her voice and that's why i'm giving 8/10. |

Talented amongst others
| Yeh, Kary might not be the prettiest amongst the Cookies but she is a talented artist. The person who gave her 0 stars, did you even listen to this album. Even if you did, with the way you judge one person inside out with the way they look, you'll still rate her nothing. No one is perfect in this world, you can't judge a book by its cover too. I'd say this album is a must buy for those who don't judge people by their appearance. |
