Winning the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the Berlin Film Festival, In Love We Trust is the latest film from acclaimed Sixth Generation director Wang Xiaoshuai (Beijing Bicycle). An affecting drama with no villains, just people, In Love We Trust quietly compels with its realistic characters, natural performances, and organic storytelling. Liu Weiwei, Zhang Jiayi, Cheng Taisheng, and Yu Nan (Tuya's Marriage) portray two remarried couples that face a tough and unexpected decision when their child falls ill. Wang Xiaoshuai continues to shine as one of China's best directors, this time with a story that is more restrained than his previous works, but no less telling about life in contemporary China. Certainly, one subtle but significant element of In Love We Trust is how the nation's one-child policy influences each individual's decision and affects perceptions of the family unit and value of life. Performances are admirable across the board, with Liu Weiwei particularly outstanding as a woman who becomes increasingly emboldened by her desperate resolution to save her daughter. Mainland starlets Gao Yuanyuan (Shanghai Dreams) and Tian Yuan (Butterfly) also appear in supporting performances.

Real estate agent Mei Zhu (Liu Weiwei), loving husband Lao Xie (Cheng Taisheng), and their sprite five-year-old daughter Hehe are just an average middle-class family living in the big city. Their normal life takes a turn for the worse though when Hehe is diagnosed with leukemia, forcing Mei Zhu to contact her ex-husband and Hehe's birth father Xiao Lu (Zhang Jiayi), who is now married to flight attendant Dong Nan (Yu Nan). Without a transplant, the little girl only has a few years to live, but neither parent's bone marrow matches. When Mei Zhu learns the best chance for a match is among siblings, she decides to have another baby with her ex-husband to save Hehe. Mei Zhu's determination places both marriages in jeopardy as Xiao Lu, Lao Xie, and Dong Nan struggle to come to terms with the situation.
