Put "Indigo Horizon" on your horizon!
|
On a steamy July Saturday in 1997, I wandered into the Shibuya Tower Records store to get out of the heat. While browsing among the racks of CDs, I stumbled upon this album, Spitz's "Indigo Horizon". Being a newbie to Japanese music at the time, I knew nothing about Spitz, but bought the CD anyway. From the album cover, it looked like the guys had a sense of humor, which promised something entertaining. Little did I know what pleasures awaited when I slapped this disk into my CD player. "Indigo Horizon" may be the most tuneful album of rock music to come along since the Beatles. The Spitz sound is anchored by a truly great rhythm section (Akihiro Tamura playing very tuneful bass lines and Sakiyama Tatsuo driving the backbeat on drums). Miwa Tetsuya provides sometimes shimmering, sometimes grinding guitar riffs that never call attention to themselves, but instead beautifully serve the band's tightly written, jaggedly pleasing songs. Kasana Masamune's tenor vocals swagger and soar. Add them all together and you get melodic pop bliss atop a firmly rocking foundation. "Indigo Horizon" is not only my favorite Japanese rock album; it is among my favorite rock albums of all time. I recommend it very highly. |
