Andrew Lau, director/cinematographer of this film, has previously brought us such classics as the Young And Dangerous series, and the special effects fest Stormriders. However, he should also be held responsible for films such as the confusing Bullets Of Love (which I can't help thinking of as ""Bullets Urve Lurrrrve"") and the utterly tosspottish Wesley's Mysterious File, in which the only mystery was how such a respectable cast were persuaded to show their faces in such drivel. So ""highly variable"" would be one way of referring to this director: when he gets it right, he gets it right in an earth-shattering, multiple-orgasming kind of way, and when he gets it wrong, he gets it so wrong that you wish a tidal wave would sweep over the planet to remove the evidence. Fortunately for the cinema-going public, Infernal Affairs belongs to the former category: everyone from critics to audiences to people off the street are raving about this film. It should come as no surprise that two sequels are expected to be completed later this year. The plot is simple: a cop undercover in the triads crosses paths with a triad undercover in the cops. The two main characters, played with consummate skill by Tony Leung Chiu Wai (as the former) and Andy Lau Tak Wah (as the latter), navigate the difficulties of their respective roles like soldiers crossing a minefield. The tension inherent in constantly living a double life, and indeed a double life that has a high risk of sudden violent death, fairly leaps off the screen. Both actors were nominated for the Best Actor award in the 22nd Hong Kong Film Awards, with Tony Leung taking the statue, one of six that Infernal Affairs scored. The supporting cast without exception was superb. Eric Tsang and Anthony Wong, as the triad boss and police boss respectively, inhabited their roles with verve and passion, which we've come to expect from Tsang at least. Wong, known in recent years for sleepwalking through roles he feels unexcited about, had a bumper year in 2002, with three nominations for the Best Supporting Actor in the HKFA. He eventually won for this role, away from Infernal Affairs cast-mates Eric Tsang and Chapman To. I must say that even Edison Chen, someone I've always had a strong aversion to, did well in his albeit small role. In fact, amongst the whole cast, there wasn't a single wrong note or lacklustre performance from anyone. Sammi Cheng shone as a dramatic character, while Kelly Chen, although less than credible as a psychiatrist, at least comported herself with some professionalism and refrained from creating a spectacle (as she did in Lavender, for example). So overall, an interesting story made exceptional by the performances of the whole cast. 9 morse code taps out of 10 by Alison Jobling - heroic-cinema.com " |

Infernal Affairs
|
This in no slam-bang bloody action film but an excellent examination of four characters caught up in their own Inferno. This film haunts; it stands up over time -- viewing a year or so later is just as powerful as the first time. If you want slash and burn, avoid this trilogy -- if you want strong performances abd excellent characterizations hung upon a stong plot, this is one you will not want to miss! |

Great Movie
|
Infernal Affairs is one of HK cinema's most impressive movies... It is a very intricate and clever film. The story is captivating, the actors are brilliant, the music is haunting and there are even some humourous moments too! The trilogy is great because you can watch it and link the story together as it unfolds. I would definitely highly recommend this movie to anyone! |

ok film, too hyped up
|
After all the hoo ha about Internal Affairs I bought the dvd to see what it was all about. Very disappointed!! It was dead slow to start and when it got started, it ended!! Theres was hardly any action just a load of repetative 'life-is-hard' talk. To me it seems the producer/makers of the film just got a loada VERY well known actors (whom I'm sure some of us are sick of seeing all the time) who are in almost every hong kong film produced in the last 2/3 decades. This is a very 'A' typical HK movie - good looking actors, well known people, good vs evil etc. Where are the new talents?? C'mon how original?! |

Excellant
|
This is an excellant trilogy. Upon first viewing I like Infernal Affair 1 the best but overall I love Infernal Affair 2 the best. 3 is kinda weird but still okay. On the region lockout thing. It is region 3, but will work on most dvd players. I got a couple of movies like that where they won't work on a certain dvd player but will on another cause of that strange lockout feature. 5 Stars!!!!!!!! |

superb
|
this has to be one of the best hong kong trilogy i've EVER seen! the plot is so intriguing and you can't help but be sucked into watching all three movies in one sitting. (i did) i loved the first movie...and the second i'm particularly attached to because...well i like shawn yue and edison chen...the second movie was actually the developing of the characters. so to some people this arrangement of the movies was really confusing. the third movie was probably the one i liked least...because of the ending...but overall...everything was really good and i now have even greater hopes for the asian movie industry!! |
