Before hitting the big time with several Stephen Chow action comedy blockbusters, Gordon Chan began his directorial career helming a trio of Lawrence Cheng comedies. First it was the "Small Man" classic The Yuppie Fantasia in 1989, next came the sequel Brief Encounter in Shinjuku in 1990, and then Inspector Pink Dragon in 1991. In the latter film, Lawrence Cheng plays CID officer Ma Yu Lung, who in essence is still his trademark "Small Man" character, and he's again caught in a romantic dilemma, having to choose between the beautiful new flame (Rosamund Kwan) and his gorgeous girlfriend (Nina Li). The main plot concerns Ma Yu Lung going undercover into the company where his old buddy (Tony Leung Ka Fai) used to work before he was murdered, and Ma's race with a fellow inspector (Waise Lee) to crack the case and nail the corrupt real estate developer (Damian Lau).

Inspector Dragon Ma of CID, he has lovable character although most of the times he talks too much but does too little. One night, Ma saves beautiful Julia from a robber. She was his old classmate. So she takes him to a class reunion. Ma meets Yu Yu there, who's Julia's superior officer in the Land Department. Soon, Yu Yu is killed by hired hit man Peter. CID assigns Ma to take over Yu Yu's job to help the probe. The investigation is handled by Shek who hates Ma but loves his sister. Now Ma has power and Julia becomes very friendly. That makes Ma's girl friend Nina unhappy. Julia introduces Ma to Tang, a real estate tycoon while another killing follows. When Ma wants to expose Tang, he finds out himself, Julia and Nina are all pawns ministered by Tang, the one who ordered Yu Yu's death. He feels helpless but Shek is there and ready to pound......

Intermittently entertaining cop comedy

"Inspector Pink Dragon" is a ragged, rather slapdash comedy in which the CID's most incompetent detective becomes the key figure in an undercover effort to bring down a corrupt and deadly real estate developer. Lawrence Cheng plays cowardly CID officer Ma Yu Lung. At a reunion of his former classmates, he meets Julia (Rosamund Kwan), the unattainable woman for whom he's always pined, and her boyfriend Ma Yu Yu (Tony Leung Ka Fai). Ma Yu Yu works in a government city planning office; he's been on the take, snagging bribes in exchange for approving projects and routing roads to serve those projects. Now, however, he has double-crossed developer Teng Kuo Chiao (Damian Lau) and, when he leaves the reunion, Ma Yu Yu is gunned down by Teng's henchmen. Bumbling Ma Yu Lung next stumbles upon Julia fleeing bandits who seek to nab the bag she carries. Yu Lung's ham-handed intervention ends up with the bag being flung into a raging fire; he then learns from Julia that it contained millions of dollars of bribe money that Ma Yu Yu had taken. Yu Lung goes undercover as the successor to Ma Yu Yu's city planning job, in which role he seeks to take bribes from Teng in order to pay back Julia for her burnt loot while gathering evidence against Teng that can lead to Teng's arrest. A secondary theme of the film involves Yu Lung's ongoing inept attempts to woo Julia (as Julia uses him to replace Ma Yu Yu's bribe money) while he fends off the appeals of his cousin/fiancee Tan Lan Ching (Nina Li). Just why he finds the thoroughly desirable Nina Li to be unpalatable was never clear to me. The storytelling and editing in "Inspector Pink Dragon" are choppy and inconsistent; I can't imagine that much time or care was taken in making this movie. Nonetheless, the story manages to build momentum in its second half and the presence of gorgeous Rosamund Kwan and shapely Nina Li provides plenty of eye candy for male viewers. Okay for an evening of dumb entertainment. |
