YesAsia Editorial Description

It's seduction and sexual intrigue as Lily Ho gets her revenge in the sordid Shaw Brothers potboiler Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan. Famous director Chor Yuen directs this erotic revenge yarn, which spins a compelling tale of lesbian lovers and murderous passions in Ancient China. Lily Ho is Ainu, a beautiful young maiden abducted and sold into prostitution. Unwilling to give herself over to the world's oldest profession, Ainu is assaulted and sexually violated by the brothel's cunning madam, Lady Chun (Betty Pei). Hope seems lost for Ainu, as the evil Lady Chun does everything in her power to bind the poor girl to her. But just when things seem their darkest, Ainu finds a new goal on which to focus her entire life: revenge! Under Lady Chun's tutelage, Ainu becomes a sexual predator supreme, meaning every man - and every woman - who ever crossed Ainu had better watch out!

Co-starring Ngok Wah as a righteous police inspector, Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan has been noted as an inspiration for the notorious cult classic Naked Killer, and shows its influence in its central theme of an innocent woman who uses her sexual powers against those who've tormented her. A compelling thriller dressed up with gorgeous Shaw Brothers sets and costumes, Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan is a milestone of Hong Kong erotic cinema.

One of the most controversial and best-directed films in the history of Hong Kong erotic cinema, these Intimate Confessions shocked avid audiences in 1972, and even today exerts a raw power. Lily Ho, in her most daring role, plays an aristocratic maiden abducted and sold to the Four Seasons Brothel where she is caught in a web of sex, murder, and intrigue in both the bordello and the imperial court.

Professional Review of "Intimate Confessions Of A Chinese Courtesan"

April 14, 2003

Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan is one of Shaw Brothers' more infamous and influential films, one that shocked audiences when it was released in 1972. It's since been remade by the same director (as 1984's Lust for Love of a Chinese Courtesan) and was apparently the inspiration for Clarence Fok's Naked Killer. It has garnered its reputation for its marriage of the kung-fu genre with eroticism, usually a recipe for thoroughly B-grade cinema. However, Intimate Confessions' acting, production values and slightly loopy plot manage to elevate it above such description.

The story concerns Ai Nu, a young girl kidnapped from her family and sold into service at a bustling brothel run by luminous madam Chun-i (Betty Pei Ti). Chun-i herself isn't the slightest bit interested in men, preferring the company of women, and she's captivated immediately by Ai Nu's rebellious spirit and potential as a high-class courtesan.

In a typical Shaw Brothers twist, though, Chun-i is also an expert fighter and perfectly willing to hurt or kill those who betray her. This point is very quickly made to Ai Nu, along with the easy life she could have if she follows orders and submits to the madam's advances.

Ai Nu quickly becomes the most desirable and exclusive courtesan in the brothel and is violated in a serious of quick, ugly scenes (complete with slow motion footage of gleefully laughing older men), culminating in a botched attempt to take her own life. These scenes are deliberately (I suspect) made as thoroughly distasteful, and each ends in a freeze-frame. The director wants us to remember these men and what they've done to the unwilling young girl. A desire for vengeance is quickly kindled in Ai Nu as she becomes all that Chun-i wishes her to be, all the while plotting her revenge.

As she sets her sights on those who have wronged her, Ai Nu encounters Chief Ji (Yueh Hua), a young officer tasked with bringing the murderer who's knocking off local officials to justice. There are some great scenes between him and Ai Nu: both of them know what's going on, but he can't prove a thing and is loathed to accuse so powerful a consort of local government officials.

Intimate Confessions really stands out in the Shaw Brothers' stable: it's an intense melodrama, a kung-fu film, a brightly-coloured wuxia fantasy and a cat-and-mouse film, all rolled into one. In some ways, it's a diversion for director Chu Yuan, moving from his 'martial arts world' (the focus of most of his films for Shaw Brothers) into the floating world of brothels and courtesans that sits alongside it. No expense has been spared: Lily Ho and Betty Pei Ti are two of Shaws' most prominent lead actresses, Yueh Hua was one of the leading male stars of the day, and the costumes and sets are lavish. The camerawork is excellent too, handled with similar style and elan to Chor Yuen's work in the wuxia genre. The music is very 70's, with guitar-driven funk tunes appearing out of nowhere to presage the arrival of nubile beauties or, occasionally, wanton older men. Occasionally it's unnerving, but I suspect that overall it adds to the film's cult appeal.

All in all, it's a great film: difficult to pigeonhole, colourful and thoroughly entertaining. I recommend it to anyone who's a fan of the Shaw Brothers' films and wants to see a skewed take on the wuxia genre.

Another magnificent performance by Lily Ho Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
During the 1960s to 1970s, HK Shaw Brothers graced a lot of actressess, one of them is Lily Ho and she was my favourite. I saw this movie at the age of 12, but at that time it was censored until now I bought the original VCD, then I really enjoyed watching this moive. Lily was in her tip-top condition, this is one of her best performance, I am waiting for her another movie, which brought her to stardom, "MY DREAM BOAT".
According to the director, Chu Yuan, MR Shaw liked this movie very much and Chu Yan later directed the same movie with same story again which stars Hu Kuan Chen as Lily Ho's character, AI NU and Yi Ann Ann as Choon Yi. But I personally feel that Liy Ho and Pei Ti is still the best for their roles.

Breathtaking Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
A really glorious movie with two beautiful women. Lily Ho's acting as Ai Nu was fantastic. One of the most memorable scene was when Pei Ti's Chun Yi goes down on the helpless Ai Nu just after a whipping session for her stubborness. Witness Lily's expression changing from pain to rebellion to sheer horror! Pity though that the film did not further develop the budding love between Ai Nu and Yueh Hua's character.

The most Beautiful erotic chinese film ever made. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I first saw this movie in 1972, I was shock and I was 6 years old :-)
I enjoyed it even more watching it again today and
I am glad that this film didn't got cut and censored edited like other Shaw bro's movie. That could have been terrible and stupid thing to do!
I could not want to watch the terrible results. For god's sake. Its only rated R. Why do they have to cut it? I don't understand.
The wrost cut I've seen so far is the " Human Lanterns ".
The cut were bad and not well edited in transition.

This movie is definitely director Chu Yuan's best work.
His movies got worse as he got older. Same as King Hu ( Hu King-Chuan)
Lily Ho is just wonderful and at her most beautiful state in this movie.
The sets were well build, the costume, lighting, camera angles and the
music, action, every detail is well consider.
This is truely one of the best Hong Kong film ever made.
Don't miss it!
