Unlike the Korean version's condensed, energetic take on the tale, Into the White Night tells its complex story of murder and past regrets in a more traditional, chronological fashion. Fukugawa first takes his time to set up the three protagonists - a woman climbing out of her tragic childhood, a man she once knew that has since become a criminal, and an obsessed detective that won't stop investigating an unsolved murder - before sending them on a tragic collision course. Horikita Maki (the Always - Sunset on Third Street series) takes on her most mature role yet as an opportunistic woman with skeletons in her closet, while Kora Kengo (Bandage) is both dangerous and charming as a mysterious criminal. An ambitious crime thriller spanning two decades, Into the White Night has been acclaimed by film critics since its world premiere at the 2010 Tokyo Film Festival.

In 1980, a man has been found dead, and the police - led by detective Sasagaki (Funakoshi Eichiro) - believe he was killed by someone that they suspect to be his lover. The woman eventually kills herself, leaving her daughter Yukiho subjected to years of bullying. Meanwhile, the dead man's son Ryoji eventually descends into crime and a secluded life. 18 years later, Yukiho (Horikita Maki) and Ryoji (Kora Kengo) are now separately leading totally different lives, but the retired Sasagaki is finally starting to solve this complex puzzle, proving that Yukiho and Ryoji may be closer than they appear to be.
