Product Information

Director: Liu Chia Liang

What started as the masterful kung-fu filmmaker's homage to the heroic Sung Dynasty Yang family becomes a furious rumination on heroic sacrifice when international idol Alexander Fu Sheng died in a car accident midway through production. Wanting to immortalize Sheng's final, unfinished performance, Liu carried on. The result is unique in the director's extraordinary filmography in its emotional intensity and kung-fu power. There are heartbreaking references to the tragedy throughout, but the stunning climax is truly unforgettable. It must be seen to be believed....

Professional Review of "Invincible Pole Fighter (DVD) (US Version)"

March 15, 2004

This professional review refers to The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter
The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter- Glorious Vengeance with Kung Fu

The mid Sung Dynasty (Bei Sung) was haunted by foreign intrusions and Liao the most aggressive country of all conquered mainland China. The ruling power of Sung was too fatuous to encounter the repeated invasions led by the emperor of Liao Ye Iv-lian (Wong Lung-wai). With the protection of General Yang Ji-ye, China, however, could barely survive. But China was still harassed by internal trouble as Pan Ren-mei and Guan Gui-ji were jealous of the accomplishments made by the Yang family. Pan and Guan then became traitors to collude with the country Liao. In the battle of Jia Sha Beach, the Yang family suffered from a nearly complete annihilation leaving only their fifth- (Gordon Lau Ka-fai) and sixth-son (Alexander Fu Sheng) alive. In spite of severe injury, the fifth-son flees to the Qing Liang Temple where he beccomes a monk. Bearing the pangs of losing his family and his country, he diligently practices Eight Diagram Pole Fighting. The day to avenge the insult finally comes when Pang commits treason again and besieges Mountain Wu Tai together with the troops of Liao. The Eight Diagram Pole Fighting drill eventually pays off for the fifth-son when he manages to repulse the invaders. Afterwards, he chooses to live his life in peace wandering around the world and promoting Buddhism.

Directed by the kung fu master Liu Jia-liang and co-written by Ni Kuang, The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter is sadly the posthumous work of the acclaimed martial arts star Alexander Fu Sheng. The tragic death of Fu in the middle of the production, however, did not stop the filmmaking passion of Liu. Instead, his mourning over Fu turned into an extraordinary power to finish this movie making it one of Liu's kung fu masterpieces. As a director, martial arts choreographer and actor, Liu is the inheritor of an orthodox Kung Fu school called Hong Quan. Despite the Bruce Lee fever that gave rise to down to earth fighting sequences, Liu insisted on featuring the traditional Chinese fighting styles such as Shao Lin Quan and Hong Quan in his movies. The manipulation of the three-section cudgel in The 36th Chamber of Shaolin is one beautiful example exemplifying the power of Hong Quan. In The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter Liu continues to add glory to his school by offering masterful Eight Diagram Pole fighting performances.

Move that pole!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Gordon is still master of the pole. I've watched plenty of kung fu movies by greats such as Cheng Pei Pei, Ti Lung, David Chiang, Alexander Fu Sheng, Wang Yue, Wong Yu Wai and even Lo Lieh. No one can execute that pole like Gordon (maybe 7 out of 10 only by Jackie Chan in Drunken Master II). Pay special attention to the scene where he was challenged by the abbott before he could leave the temple to save Kara.

For Kevin of Malaysia (your review of 2005), Alexander Fu Sheng's role appeared supportive because he died of a car crash halfway through the movie. With clever editing and realighment of the story, Gordon had to save Kara Hui instead of Alexander (in the original script). As mentioned before, Gordon's maturity and his dynamic execution made this movie what it is.

LOve that man!!!

The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I've watched this movie 10 times since my review and it goes to show what a dynamic show it is. Gordon Liu wins hands-down in all his shaolin kungfu movies. As mentioned before, the finale is breathtaking, execution of moves were slippery as butter and made to look as easy as taking candy from a baby!!

Although I've mentioned in my previous review about being disappointed cause they didn't really show the specific creation of the '8 Diagram Pole' moves, I still love this movie as the moves were actually incorporated in the grand finale fighting sequence.

Only big disappointment is for classic movies like these, they should have a special feature section interviewing dynamo Gordon Liu. He did one for The 36 Chambers of Shaolin as well as Martial Club. Still looking hot at 53!!! Well, have to buy this in dvd format as well because at the rate I'm going, the vcd could be worn out!!

Real martial arts performance Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Overall is good but Fu Sheng's role is a waste of talent for being a supporting cast in the show. Fans of Gordon Liu should not miss his shaolin kungfu performance here.

The creme de la creme! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
As far as I'm concerned, this might be the finest kung fu film I've ever seen, in terms of performances, and sheer virtuosity of action choreography. Liu Chia Liang, a.k.a. Lau Kar Leung, will forever be considered one of the greatest choreographers, if not the greatest, but it is his storytelling abilities, visually and otherwise, that make movies such as this one, 36th Chamber, and Martial Club truly stand out. Not just recommended, but essential viewing!
