Putting the past behind her, Ivy makes a sensational comeback with her third album I Be.. Looking edgy, sophisticated, and beautiful on her album cover shot by renowned photographer Lee Jae Yoon, the K-pop diva shows that her two-year hiatus has only made her that much stronger. Ivy teamed up with Psy and Yoo Keon Hyung to create the simple but powerful single Touch Me, which also comes in an "electro mix" version. Her expressive R&B vocals take the limelight in the heartwrenching ballad "Goodbye Tears" (Track 4) and other new songs like "Given Advice" (Track 15) and Zoo feating Gilme.

Okay so this is the first Ivy album I have brought and to be completely truthful I only brought it because I liked the cover! Did I make a mistake …. I don’t think so!!!! To me IVY is like three singers rolled into one. There is a cutie little girl that likes to add bubblegum pop squeals to the end of her vocals, the other is a mature pop princess with strong vocals and the last a ballad queen filled with a subtle emotional voice. Ivy is all three of these singers and the collection of songs on this album really help to showcase her varied vocals. Some of the best songs are: Touch Me, a catchy club number with a pumping base and a corus that just gets stuck in your head. You also get a remix of this song at the end of the album. You are the Ace which features a clever blending of Korean verses and a English corus and reminds me of the type of songs on J Lo’s album Brave. Good which starts off with a Lady Gaga baseline and then just builds into another great sing-a-long electro club track Adios Is a more experimental track that mashes together different music styles from a husky voice rap, cheerleading shouts, to this almost Bollywood like flourish to the end of some of her vocals …. Very imaginative!!! Zoo My favourite of the ballad type songs on the album that combines Ivy’s soft vocals with the gritty rap of female rap artist Gilmi (I think that’s right my Korean translation may not be spot on!!!). It also has a really lovely piano piece! Andaeyo ( I think this is right!?!) Again another experimental track that layers an electro base with a music box melody, a rap by Day Day and the dreamy vocals of Ivy. It just makes you smile to listen to it Left 2 Right A synthesized, Euro pop, clubby number which reminds me of something you would hear on the Eurovision …. And I love the Eurovision (if you didn’t know is a music concert held for European countries every year) so that’s a good thing in my book. The booklet included has some really beautiful pictures of Ivy, one in particular shows her in this chain mail top that looks very nice!!!! I am glad to say that this album is definitely as good as it looks!!!!! |

Though I was never a major Ivy fan, I must admit that this album deserves some attention. Ivy is back under a new management company, but her own personal touch (sound) still remains. Her vocals are stronger than ever, making the ballad pieces much more sensational and the dance tracks more hype. Her classic 'Ivy' sound is still there. (A good example is 'You Are The Ace (feat. JR Groove)'. The beat is close to the genre used in past tracks like 'Poison Ivy' and 'Dawn Dawn Dawn'.) 'Touch Me' is the single release that really advertises the wild side of the album, but there's also a more gentler part of the album. I love how this albm contains alot of tracks outside of the current trend of releasing mini albums. There is so much to listen to and it all reveals how much Ivy has progressed during her hiatus. Ivy shows a softer side through tracks such as 'Andwaeyo' and 'Eochapi Ijeoya Hal Saram' and exposes a techno side through 'Left 2 Right', 'Peek-A-Boo', and so many more. However, out of all the tracks, 'Zoo' is the song that stuck out the most to me. It's slower with techtonic vocals and Gilme adds a bit of rap to the mix. The piano melody is beautiful and Ivy's soprano voice is beautiful in this track. I can't seem to take this off of repeat. I personally recommend this song. Overall, I can't seem to stop expressing how powerful this album is. This is definitely an album worth exploring. Be ready to dance the night away! ^_^ |
