Selected as the opening film at the 2004 HK International Film Festival, director Ann Hui's Jade Goddess of Mercy is adapted from a bestselling romance novel. The film stars popular singer/actor Nicholas Tse and Mainland actress Vicki Zhao(Shaolin Soccer). The story revolves around a policewoman named Anxin (Vicki Zhao) who entangles herself in the intricate love lives of three men - her devoted fiancé, a drug trafficker, and a slick playboy. Mesmerized by Maojie (Nicholas Tse) while getting ready to marry Tiejun, Anxin runs into Maojie again as she works as an undercover cop. Their passion, however, ceases as Maojie returns to take revenge for his parents.

Vicky always looks so beautiful even with all those shabby clothes. Story about the three men in her life that leads to Tse's revenge, resulting unnecessary lost of innocent lives.

Alfred Hitchcock made some great movies in which a generally good person makes a small mistake and the mistake ends up embroiling the person in a catastrophic mess. The premise works well because it promises to deliver a tense drama and high-stakes action, with the viewer rooting for the person who made the mistake.

In "Jade Goddess of Mercy", Ann Hui takes a page out of Hitchcock's book. Zhao Wei messes up by falling into a brief affair with Nicholas Tse. The consequences for her loved ones and, ultimately, herself are dramatic.

Director Hui serves up a taut, character-driven drama. Zhao Wei and her castmates deliver terrific performances. I recommend this film very highly.

although goddess of mercy's box office is just so so,the movie is brilliant.
I think goddess is the Ann Hui's best movie since Woman Forty.She shows us a brave woman,a real woman.
Zhao Wei's acting is perfect.Her powerful,meaningful acting shocked me.
As TIME said,Zhao Wei is one of the best chinese actress.
Sun Haiying is outstanding.

The moral of the story is, don't ever fall in love with three men, especially if one is a drug trafficker with guns.

An Xin (Vicki Zhao), a village policewoman, doesn't know what hit her when she meets Mao Jie (Nic Tse), a fascinating, handsome young man who's instantly interested in her. Interest quickly develops into friendship, which then develops into hot-headed passion, and before long Anxin finds herself pregnant with his baby while being engaged to the fully respectable Tie Jun. The fact that she uncovers Mao Jie as a drug trafficker only complicates matters even more. When Mao Jie and his brother are released from prison after their parents are executed, they're only too eager for An Xin's blood.

Throw in an adorable child, a reformed playboy, a wise supervisor and a jilted husband, and you have the perfect recipe for a drama.

I think the movie takes way too long to be interesting. I was dead bored for the first 20 minutes. Mao Jie's feelings, too, should have been expanded on. The reformed playboy...can't even remember his name...was not an interesting character at all, and was totally unconvincing.

But the movie is saved by the chemistry between Nic and Vicki. Nic, with his slicked hair, gives off the danger, charm and intrigue of Mao Jie very well. He's a guy who can kiss you and kill you, all in one movement. Vicki is too lethargic for me in this movie, mumbling her lines throughout, but her last scene is brilliant. 'Goddess of Mercy' is still recommended. Keep on watching even though you might fall asleep in the first 20 minutes.

It was a pretty good movie..it's worth my money buying....vicki plays a totally different part..i thought it was pretty awsome... the movie is about life...and how things sometimes doesn't seem the way you wanted to be..
