　　23歲的珍古德在母親鼓勵下，從倫敦來到非洲東部的坦尚尼亞，進行黑猩猩研究工作，並獲得動物行為學博士學位。珍古德在此也認識了攝影師雨果范勒維，兩人因熱愛動物而墜入愛河、進而結婚，並生下兒子葛拉…。

　　葛拉從小就不愛黑猩猩，卻對大海充滿興趣，一衝進浪裡就如魚得水，從來不必上學的他，擁有非常快樂的童年…。由於丈夫雨果善妒，導致原本的美好愛情終告失敗。但當珍古德認識了第二任丈夫–坦尚尼亞國家公園署長德瑞克布萊森後，夫妻齊心致力保育研究，工作與心靈都得到無比快慰…。然而好景不常，數年後德瑞克過世，珍古德傷痛之餘從此全心投入工作，四處奔走、致力於改善地球萬物與人們的生活…。珍古德對於保育工作的投入，一度得不到兒子葛拉的認同；而當葛拉長大後從事蝦蟹買賣事業時，更使母子關係降到冰點，並因而產生衝突…。
