ある初夏の晩、海岸からひとりの若い女性が消えた。翌日、浜辺に無残な彼女の遺体が打ち上げられ、平和な観光地アミティは騒然となる。警察署長ブロディ（ロイ・シャイダー）は、この事件を巨大な人食い鮫の仕業と判断。海岸を閉鎖するように提案するが、貴重な収入源である海水浴客を失うとして、市長から猛反対にあってしまう。だが間もなく、海水浴を楽しむ人々に第二の犠牲者が。責任を感じたブロディは、鮫狩りの達人クイント（ロバート・ショウ）、海洋学者フーパー（リチャード・ドレイファス）とともに船に乗り込み沖合いを目指すが、それは想像を絶する死闘の始まりだった…。
