Hands down the best movie of 2000, there's series of scenes in the middle of this movie with Tony Leung and Roy Cheung, Sandra Ng and Anthony Wong, and Tony Leung and Eric Tsang that has more to say about love, duty and disappointment than any ten films made last year. A bizarre classic from its opening shot to its final credits this is the kind of flick that makes you fall in love with its cheating, sideshow self: possessing an Oklahoma heart as big as all outdoors but always willing to interrupt a two-hankie moment for a gag. Directed by Gordon Chan's assistant director, Dante Lam, this movie has the kind of life to it that Chan wished his Okinawa Rendezvous had. Lantern-jawed Tony Leung Kar-fai stars as Jim Yuen, a triad leader in a loud suit who is marked for assassination. Trying to unravel the mystery of who's after his hide he winds up re-examining everything he took for granted about those around him: from his wife (Sandra Ng at her termagant best), to his bodyguard (Roy Cheung) to his lawyer (Chan Fai-hung in the role he was born to play). An experimental action-comedy that has the sad heart of a mountain-dwelling Buddhist monk, Jiang Hu uses Brother Jim's predicament to sum up the predicament of pretty much every single one of us. Flashbacks to his salad days mugging folks in London with Sandra Ng, past interactions with triad bosses, conversations about who did what to whom ten years ago, and brief interludes with ancillary characters flutter across Jim's face like shadows. The mysterious little grace notes of a lucky bastard's life pile up, but at the end of the day you've just got Tony Leung looking at his life, all piled up in broken pieces, and disco dancing in the dark on top of a table. The movie is also a comedy. A really, really great comedy that recalls the straight-laced parodies of Hong Kong genre films that came out in the early 90's (Flirting Scholar, Last Hero in China, Cheez N' Ham). Jiang Hu: The Triad Zone is the first and last word on triad movies, managing an outrageous scatological sight gag one minute, asking for a respectful moment of silence the next. The action scenes that crop up are well-staged (as one would expect from a Gordon Chan protege) but they usually go places that Gordon Chan would never dream of (one ends with the arrival of the God Kwan, played by Anthony Wong). The subtext to all the jokes is the gulf between appearance and reality, between what we wanted to be when we grew up and what we actually became. It's the unbridgeable gap between life and the movies: between a perfect fiction, and an imperfect world. Like a carnival huckster with a heart of gold, Jiang Hu can't help but try to sell you this bill of brilliantly cinematic goods, but in the end it comes down on the side of life, not perfectibility. It's that rare movie that subverts itself by flouting its loose ends and uncertainties rather than tying them up in a neat narrative bow. The actors make up a who's who of smart Hong Kong movies: Ann Hui, Eason Chan, Roy Cheung, Lee Lik-chi, Eric Tsang, Lee Siu-kei, and Anthony Wong. Reviewer : Grady Hendrix (USA) |

I purchased this film expecting to be drawn into a very deep story line.....................sadly mistaken, now i will not say that this was a bad film but it was extremely corny at times. There is pretty good action but the story line is to fictional for my liking. I gave it a 5/10, but hey for the price you can't beat it. Worth a buy |

What is it with HK cinema? Tony Leung Ka Fai has always been one of the most versatile actors in the business, with multiple awards for his work. Now that he has gotten older, it appears that the film industry has all but forgotten him! If you have a chance to see this film, and I strongly recommend that you do, you can see the same charm, humor and charisma that made him a star in the first place. This film is a terrific vehicle for his talents, and the other players are wonderful, as well. I am not a fan of Triad movies, but I love a good comedy and this movie is great fun with its?sly humor. The story is, basically, about a man who has traveled his life down the wrong path. Along the way he has accidentally picked up a wonderful entourage of supportive people he does not appreciate, and is frankly blank when it comes to recognizing their many merits. Among the most important of these merits is the unwavering loyalty these folks give this obviously flawed man. He has, also, through the years, made a great many enemies. He is an arrogant two-bit con man who thinks he owns the world until he is cornered and must re-evaluate his priorities. He takes a good hard look at the people who are close to him ?their loyalty, wants, needs and love for him. Along the road to his enlightenment, there are some wonderful moments, many hysterically funny, some very touching. Look for my favorite scenes the one where they are trapped under the car is priceless as is the hit?where he is misunderstood? The scene where he meets the other Triad boss in the restaurant has some of the funniest shtick I have seen in years, and then there is my very favorite scene in the opening, watch the dance. It brings back many memories of Tony Leung Ka Fai in his heyday. It is wonderful, confident and joyful. A true delight. If you have seen Zhou Yu's Train? Double Vision? or The Gua Sha Treatment?you know he hasnt lost that incredible talent. He should still be at the top of the A?list. He just keeps getting better! |

I thought this movie was better than I expected. I had low expection of it but it suprised me. Tony Leung Kai Fai plays a great triad boss and Sandra Ng is great in it also. They both have great chemistry together. This movie will make you think because it leaves many questions unanswer. Everyone has to check this movie out, especially if you are into triad movies. |
