Call For Love (DVD) (English Subtitled) (China Version)
March 30, 2007 What girls have to put up withGood looking film and a great looking cast. The English sub-titles are excellent, so enabling us non-Chinese speakers to enjoy this inventive and attractive comedy. Sure, it's bitter sweet at times but still a lot of fun and Fan Bingbing looks just as great in a policewoman's uniform as she did in a space suit in A Chinese Tall Story. And if anyone knows where to buy one of these magic mobile phones, please let me know. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
Rave Fever
December 15, 2006 HK Beautiful PeopleFun entertainment, a comedy-mystery, infused by techno music and Hong Kong's schicki-micki beautiful people. No heavy issues. No violence. Cool sounds. Beautiful women. A wacky Sam Lee. Twists and turns leading to a surprise ending. There should be more films like this and if they star Jaymee Yong and YoYo Mung, even better. In respect of the dvd itself, the picture is good quality and the English sub-titles are clear. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

Combining thoughtful reflection with action - a great car chase through Hong Kong, probably filmed ilegally and a tense heist at the Hong Kong Jockey club supply the action high-points - the film culminates in a none too cheerful ending. Difficult to understand why this film is not better known, as it's just as good as some of the better known Hong Kong actioners and can hardly fail to succeed with two leading stars of such quality. Not to be missed. The English sub-titles are a-ok by the way. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
Condor Hero (End) (English Subtitled) (China Version)

July 16, 2006 Romantic FantasticThere are not enough mainland series with English sub-titles but here we have all episodes of the latest version of the tale of the Return of the Condor Hero. And it is great fun, combining romance, drama and martial arts. I didn't know any of the actresses before but Liu Yifei, Kong Ling and Meng Gwongmei are all terrific. Some people are not keen but I love the blue streaks in Meng Gwongmei's hair (she is one mean woman though ultimately we understand her tragedy). I was not familiar with the story, set in the Song dynasty, and found it quite difficult to follow at first but it all comes together as the episodes progress. The boxed set is attractive and the DVD discs play well; note that some discs imply they only have chinese sub-titles but that is not the case - all episodes have English sub-titles; admittedly, the English translations can be ropey at times, to put it mildly, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment. More films like this, please. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
Green Snake (DTS Version)
December 11, 2005 MasterpieceA genuinely great film: imaginative, spectacular, humourous and tragic, this will not be like anything you have seen before. Some viewers may dislike the lurid colours but they lend the film a sense of otherworldliness wholly appropriate to the story and to its characters - the Green Snake and the White Snake who have descended to earth and the Buddhist priest struggling with his inner demons. Joey Wang and Maggie Cheung have never, simply never, been more beautiful on the screen. Not only visually does 'Green Snake' excel - the score by James Wong Jim is astonishing, with the introductory song peformed by Winnie Hsin and the later dance piece by Sarah Chen stunning both in their beauty and in their harmonization with the images they accompany. If Tsui Hark had made only this film, he would deserve to be remembered for ever. Not a sugar-coated inconsequential fairy tale, the director has fashioned an unforgettable romance of forbidden love assailed by monkish inflexibility and the pettiness of the world. The closing image is extremely powerful, only to be compared in its potency to the conclusion of the German film 'Aguirre, Wrath of God'. Nothing more to be said - a fabulous fabulous film. CARRY ON HOTEL
December 11, 2005 All's well that end's wellNothing heavy, simply a fine selection of stars getting into various entertaining scrapes in a Singapore hotel. You'll probably enjoy the film most if you are a fan of the principal players - Kent Cheng & Charles Chin, Richard Ng, Eric Tsang and Jacky Cheung & Joey Wang - but the humour is obvious enough that it can be appreciated even if that is not the case; the four stories comprising 'Carry on Hotel' are quite varied, so no need to fear boredom through repetition; the last two stories are the strongest, with Eric Tsang's darkly humourous piece - he is a womanizer who finds himself in the clutches of the convincingly crazy and beautiful Cherie Chung and Pat Ha - perhaps the strongest, though the Joey Wang/Jacky Cheung/Cecilia Yip romantic tale that closes the film is also very effective in its portrayal of Jacky's infatuation with Joey - not difficult to understand - much to the consternation of tom-boy Cecilia (who manages to look good in dungarees and trainers). All in all, a pleasant way to pass 90 mintes. Finally, an aside - Kent Cheng's catch phrase in the opening story is 'Fu-k me' on the Cantonese sound-track; if you want to avoid this, listen in Mandarin. Did you find this review helpful? December 7, 2005 A sad tale's best for winterThe bareness of the landscapes, the desolate fortesses and the use by King Hu of colour tints lend an atmospheric bleakness and otherworldliness to this tale of a stranded spirit - Joey Wang - being pursued by the demon king of Ying Yang and ultimately seeking assistance from High monk Sammo Hung. This bleakness endows the film with a stronger sense of horror than other confrontations with the spirit world such as 'A Chinese Ghost Story', 'Picture of a Nymph' or 'Golden Swallow', with the difference only emphasised by the complete absence of a romantic element in 'Painted Skin': Adam Cheng, playing the failed scholar Hsi Tzu who meets and initially shelters the spirit Feng (Joey), is no more than a married lecher and you feel for Feng's isolation. While it's a decent film, it is rather cheerless and downbeat, but worth seeing nonetheless. There is a fine duet accompanying the final credits, though I am unclear if Joey Wang herself is singing. Finally, while the picture quality on the disc is acceptable, the subtitles, being imbedded, can at times be difficult to read. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
December 3, 2005 Michiko Magic
First class combination of comedy and action as Lam Ching Ying battles it out with the fabulously beautiful Michiko Nishiwaki in Hong Kong; the supporting cast are all excellent, especially Billy Chow as the controlled and sinister servant of Michiko. The humour is light and uncynical and all the more enjoyable for it, while the final confrontation between Michiko and Lam Ching Ying, which includes a fight between the lead and Billy Chow, is increasingly ferocious and a suitable finale for the film. While perhaps not as consistently entertaining as 'Mr. Vampire', 'Magic Cop' is a gem of a film, with Lam Ching Ying at the top of his Taoist game and Michiko in her best and most seductive role ever. It's only a shame that there was no 'Magic Cop 2'. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
Red & Black
December 3, 2005 Offbeat indeedLam Ching Ying and Joey Wang fans should enjoy this film, but it is not a comedy or escapist fantasy, containing as it does some quite harrowing scenes depicting the impact of the Cultural Revolution on ordinary people in rural China. Lam Ching Ying puts in a solid performance as he is forced to confront the demonic being that has possessed Joey's father, but he does this without the elaborate Daoist accoutrements seen in other films such as Mr. Vampire and Spritual Trinity. Joey is of course beautiful but that is not the focus here, as she plays the daughter of a "capitalist-roader", her father at first being a victim of the Cultural Revolution but then returning as a sinister and malevolent party apparatchik controlled by the evil spirit. Note that special effects are almost non-existent but they are not needed for the story stands well enough on its own as it draws the three principal characters together to face the enemy. In respect of the disc itself, the picture quality is fine, while the English sub-titles are quite comprehensible, if a bit ropey at times. To conclude - this film deserves to be better known.
