Short but sweet musical crossover
They have the same birthday but different styles. Their fanbases hardly overlap, yet when their mikes clash, audiences regardless of allegiances are all in for a blast.

The fresh pairing of Anthony Wong and Joey Yung certainly turns many heads. Joey is the reigning queen of Canto-pop, and Anthony's credentials are...well, like he needs any. The first collaboration between these two pop icons, their joint concert held in AsiaWorld-Expo on November 22, 2008 was regrettably too short at just over 100 minutes, but like so many good things in the world, what counts is not the length but the strength.

And the concert certainly played to the singers' strengths. There was minimal stage design. Each of them changed costumes once only, going backstage for the other to have a solo session. They didn't talk much either, and the show was simply a tightly paced set list of 23 songs (with nice rearrangements) shared between them.

Anthony and Joey warmed themselves up - and had the audiences tapping their toes - with four upbeat songs. The man even danced a little. Then Joey took a changing break and he had the stage all to himself. He crooned four songs from his album King of the Road and covered Joey's "Hurting Love", and the audiences melted.

Joey returned for two duet numbers from Anthony's repertoire, "Whirlpool" and "Unknown Whereabouts". She carried the tunes so well that Cass Phang and Sandy Lam (the original singers) would have been proud. "Ming Gor" then retreated and left the stage to her. Joey was clearly better at working up the crowd, evident when she belted out four songs from her album In Motion, in addition to covering three Anthony classics including "Next Station, Heaven" and "Tonight the Stars are Bright". Then the gentleman came back out to hook up with Joey for the final run. They captivated the audience with five more songs, ending the night to the tune of Ms. Yung's "The Splendid Encounter".

The DVD aptly captures the full glory of the concert, but could certainly do without the occasional annoying MTV-style effects overlayed onto the proceedings. That said, this minor fault doesn't take away from the greatness of the joint effort from two of the best Hong Kong singers working today.
