Awards
The Killer revolves around Chong, a killer who accidentally hurt singer Jenny's eyes when completing his mission. Tracked by cop Lee Ying and Jenny's employer, who aims to take his life, Chong turns up six months later. In the blazing gun actions, a little girl is injured and Chong risks his life to send her to the hospital. Lee therefore believes that Chong will somehow make his way back to Jenny and the two mastermind a plan to catch him…
Featuring John Woo's impressive film editing and his recurrent motif of brotherly love in triads, the film's intriguing plot is further enhanced with the score written by Wu Da-wai and Lo Kwun-ting. In Hong Kong, in the sixties, life was simple and poor. there were also riots. Bee, Wings and Frank were very good friends and grew up together in the resettlement area. They had known each other since they were children. One day, Bee's mother felt ill and was taken to hospital. Injured, Bee did not dare to see Jane with her last breath All the people then worked very hard to raise money for the funeral expenses as well as marriage fees. During Bee and Jane's marriage party, Frank was carrying the money from Frank and hurt him. Later, Frank returned to the party and pretended that nothing had happened, but Bee realized that something was wrong. When the three, originally with high hope and illegal goods arrived at Vietnam, they witness an assassination by the Viet Cong in the downtown area. All their illegal goods and prospects were lost. They were therefore aware that they had gone into a dangerous war zone. The three decided to find Luke who was a professional Killer in Vietnam to ask for help. classic john woo with a twist

I am going to do this review on "Bullet In The Head", since most people should know "The Killer" pretty well by now. "Bullet" is what I would describe as a classic John Woo flick, some recurring themes from his early work are obvious here, such as crime, brotherhood, and justice through revenge. However, Woo goes beyond the typical basic exploration on human nature and relations in the film by also providing a historical and socio-political context to the story. The time is the 60's roughly: Hong Kong is in a time of social and political turmoil, Vietnam is engulfed in a major civil war, with the Americans knees-deep in the conflict. The story of the three characters in the movie links the two places together, as they escape HK in an attempt to strike out on their own to make their fortune in a distant land. But what they find was not gold and glamour, instead it's a world where good and evil have lost their boundaries, where life is defined by senseless killings and random violence. Come to think of it, this movie almost carries an anti-war message. As is characteristic of most of Woo's early HK work, the film's plot is a little loose and at times superficial in its construction, however, the brilliance of the film shines through in its cast's genuine and earnest performance. Most worthy of mention is Jacky Cheung's character "Fai Chai", Cheung, a pop singer by trade in real life, does an excellent job in portraying the transition of his character from a small street delinquent to a man who's pushed to the limits, eventually becoming an assasin who kills to fill his morphine addiction. The rest of the cast, Tony Leung and Simon Yam also play their roles with conviction. All in all, this is a classic John Woo film which is similar to his other work but at the same time different. I would recommend it not for the action, but for the good acting. |

The Bullet In the Head DVD is The Killer and The Killer DVD is Bullet In the Head. They got the movies mixed up on the dvds. The movies are grainy, the surround sound is muted and there are some synch problems. This dvd set has a lot of problems. |
