The Housemaid (2010) (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
The Housemaid (2010) (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version) DVD Region 3
(2)Our Price: US$15.99Usually ships within 1 to 2 daysMarch 3, 2011 more sophisticated - more simplisticthis film takes the dangerously scheming housemaid of the 1960 B&W original - and turns her into a "victim" of the rich family who hire her
this is the type of "victim" who at first accepts the husband into her bed despite the wife's considerate treatment of her - then eagerly welcomes him
but you shouldnt see it that way cuz the family is rich and heartless - as evidenced by their aloof manner - Western fashions - the cold empty silence of their spacious house - intruded on occasionally by the alien sounds of Western Classical music
theyre evil - so in this simpleminded universe - she must be the nice one - even the family child loves her - if there were a family dog...
at least the film is technically sophisticated compared to the primative original - with suitably spare dialog - and actors who neatly fit into the 2-dimensional roles
but theres hardly an honest human moment thru out

The Twilight Samurai (Hong Kong Version)
The Twilight Samurai (Hong Kong Version) DVD Region 3
(12)Our Price: US$19.49Usually ships within 7 daysMarch 3, 2011 Counter-culture samuraiThe low-ranking samurai has secret fighting skills but loves peace. He ain't rich. His tribulations are multitude: he just lost his wife, he has 2 young daughters who he wants to see educated beyond traditional standards, an alzheimers mother -- and too small a stipend. What's a samurai to do. Well... he talks alot. The cover art of the DVD I saw promises action. It's a lie. There's about 1 minute of very reluctant fighting in a 2 hour movie. Still, it should be mildly interesting for adults. Amusing for philosophers. Obligatory if you're an aging hippie.

March 3, 2011 bickering love potentialspretty Shim Eun Ha's CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST debuted in January 1998 - this film debuted in December 1998 - two better films can rarely be found in any actors entire filmography - much less in the same year
CHRISTMAS is a difficult film to categorize - this one is a formulaic romantic comedy/drama - but its so full of surprises that is ranks at the top of the genre
this one's for people who like bickering love potentials - one is a soldier on leave from the army who is surprised to find his girlfriends apartment being occupied by someone else - while these two pine away for other people - they squabble as they collaborate over a screenplay about love
this is a south korean film - so you can't be sure everything will end happily
Lee Seong Jae - who plays the young man - was just starting out on a successful career - while the wonderful Shim Eun Ha would unexpectedly retire in a couple years despite being a top star not yet 30 years old
in supporting roles - korean film icon Ahn Sung Kee and pretty Song Seon Mi contribute as much as the stars do
not only does a DVD of this film reside alongside CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST in my personal library - but both crowd in with a handful of films at the very top of my favorites list
