Stop segregating the dance tracks!

Jolin Tsai's "Jeneration Collection" follows a formula which is becoming disturbingly familiar -- putting all of the dance songs together on one disk and putting the slow and mid-tempo numbers on a second disk. I don't understand this concept at all. Perhaps the artists who do this anticipate that people will use the dance disk as a party album. Unfortunately, the effect of listening to such a disk packed with one pounding dance track after another is enervating. All those beats begin to sound the same and, by the time the listener reaches the middle of the disk, it all becomes quite tedious. I love the first six tracks on CD 1 of this collection; after those six dance songs, they all sound the same to me. The ballads and mid-tempo pop found on CD 2 are great songs, nicely sung, and include some beautiful updates of golden oldies. The 416-page photo book seems a bit self-indulgent. I would have preferred a DVD of Jolin's music videos. |
