アイスランドで地質学の調査を行っていた科学者トレバーと甥っ子ショーン、地元ガイドのハンナは、突然洞窟の中に閉じ込められてしまう。脱出する道を求め、進むは地球の奥深く、頼みの綱は道先案内の青い地底鳥。磁力で浮かぶ不安定な岩場や、ピラニアが飛跳ねまわる嵐の海など前人未到の旅路で３人はとんでもない大型恐竜や、意思を持つ人喰い植物などに次々と遭遇。さらに、地底の火山活動まで活発化。急いで地上に戻る道を見つけようとするのだが—。
