Stripped of the 3D gimmicks that helped make it one of the most successful movies (boxoffice-wise) of summer 2008, Journey to the Center of the Earth inevitably has to endure harsher scrutiny as it becomes available on video. But let's go easy on the folks who made the flick. They knew what they could and could not do, and obviously, they didn't want to present too much challenge for themselves or the audience. The bottom line: it's a kiddie popcorn movie that works on an amusement park ride level, and it's always intended that way. With that in mind, one could find the movie easier to enjoy. The filmmakers wisely chose not to do a direct adaptation of Jules Verne's science fiction classic (maintaining some distance gave them more freedom to fool around), but rather had it as a referenced text within the movie, a bible of sorts to a secret cult following, whose members believe the novel is a real account of an actual expedition into the heart of the Earth. The biggest draw is introduced right at the beginning of the movie - no, not Brendan Fraser, the T-Rex. Ever since Jurassic Park struck boxoffice gold, Hollywood has been enamored with the dino, so it's no wonder why it featured more prominently in the movie's marketing than the human actors, despite having only a screen time of five minutes tops. Fraser plays a geologist professor who discovers from his vanished Verne-follower brother that the science fiction may actually be fact after all. Accompanied by his young nephew (Josh Hutcherson) and their gorgeous guide (Anita Briem), he goes deep underground through a mountain cave in Iceland. Thus begins the journey to the center of the Earth, and we audiences get to tag along for the ride. And what a thrill ride it is! After some free-fall fun, speeding mine cart ride (it's not Temple of Doom, but still pretty entertaining) and water slide excitement, voila! The trio is thousands of miles below the surface, and they find the fantastical world described in Verne's book becoming reality. This lost world is inhabited by exotic creatures, which provide for some interesting action sequences. There are glowing birds, flesh-eating plants (a.k.a. Fraser's green punching bag), flying piranhas (a.k.a. baseballs with teeth for our heroes to hit), and giant sea monsters. Veteran visual effects guru Eric Brevig won an Oscar for his work in Total Recall, so he had ample experience and technical know-how to create make-believe worlds in his directorial debut here. Conventional wisdom tells us characters in 3D movies rarely go beyond being one- or two-dimensional, and don't expect this movie to be any different. Fraser's no Ford, and his character may just be an Indiana Jones wannabe, but he does an admirable job here. This goofy guy with bulging biceps and a glorious grin has a knack for acting and emoting against the green screen, coming off movies like The Mummy trilogy. One might even argue that his role is more difficult to pull off than the whip-wielding adventurer, having to play both the action hero and the comic relief himself. The DVD's extras include two remote-controlled mini-games inspired by the roller coaster and the piranha sequences from the movie, and just like the movie, they are some silly fun to kill your time with. |
