YesAsia Editorial Description
Years ago, a debt collector was slain by a samurai. Before falling to his death, the debt collector placed a curse on the samurai who went on to kill his wife and himself. Years later, the samurai's son Shinkichi (Onoe Kikunosuke) is now a tobacco seller, and as cruel fate would have it, he falls in love with the debt collector's daughter Toyoshiga (Kuroki Hitomi) who is years his senior. Toyoshiga's jealous nature, however, drives a wedge in their relationship, and he accidentally injures her during a quarrel, inflicting a wound similar to that which killed her father. After she dies, Shinkichi runs off with one of her students (Inoue Mao), hoping to start anew, but Shinkichi can't seem to escape Toyoshiga's resentful spirit and all the women who cycle relentlessly in and out of his life.

"Kaidan" is a stunningly beautiful horror tale about the sins of the father being visited upon subsequent generations. A humble acupuncturist who saves his money then lends it for interest has trouble collecting a loan from an arrogant samurai. When he presses the samurai for repayment, the samurai kills the moneylender. Next we fast forward to the next generation. A humble tobacco salesman (the son of the samurai) catches the eye of a famed singing teacher (the daughter of the moneylender). However, the singing teacher soon comes to suspect that the salesman is interested in one of her students. When they squabble over his intentions, he inadvertently cuts the eyelid of the teacher. The cut strangely turns into a horrible boil, which gets steadily worse until it kills the teacher. However, before she dies, she tells the salesman that if he ever marries another woman, she will haunt them forever. Will the teacher's ominous warning come true? Since this is a horror movie, you probably can guess the outcome. Typical of the genre, "Kaidan" is quite schematic in the presentation of its creepy story. What sets it apart is the eye-popping beauty of its cinematography, costuming, set decoration, and cast. This is a feast for the eyes! Highly recommended. |
