Released in 1999, Bootleg Film (a.k.a. Kaizokuban) is the second film from internationally acclaimed filmmaker Kobayashi Masahiro, who first made his mark with the 1996 film Closing Time. Shot in black-and-white, Bootleg Film is a blackly comic road movie about two men, Tatsuo (Emoto Akira) and Kiyoshi (Shiina Kippei), who are the best of friends despite being on opposite sides of the law. Tatsuo is a retiring Yakuza, while Kiyoshi is a cop, and the two are on a minor road trip in order to attend the funeral of their mutual beloved, Fumiko. But while remembering her, the two begin a simmering resentment towards the other - which boils over when the two meet a young couple who discover a dead body in the back of Tatsuo and Kiyoshi's car! Even worse, the body is Tatsuo's brother...

Bootleg Film screened in the "Un Certain Regard" category at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. This 2006 DVD edition features English subtitles and comes with a 16 page booklet.

小松立夫と会田清司は親友同士。2人は同じ車に乗り、ある女性の葬式に向かうため北海道の小さな町を走り抜けていた。その女性の名は、文子。彼女は警官である会田の元妻で、ヤクザである小松の愛人であった。始めは文子の思い出話に花を咲かせていた2人だったが、やがてそれぞれの思いがぶつかり合い…。
シナリオライターとして活躍した後に監督デビューを果たし、1作品ごとに着実に評価を獲得、第7作目の「バッシング」が2005年カンヌ国際映画祭コンペティション部門に公式出品された小林政広。本作は、1999年カンヌ国際映画祭の"ある視点"部門に正式出品されたエモーショナル・ロードムービー。死んでしまった一人の女性を巡り葛藤する男2人を、柄本明と椎名桔平が見事に演じている。
