A slice of aimless Japanese life gets served upon the audience in Kakuto, the directorial debut of model-turned-actor-turned-director Yusuke Iseya (After Life, ). Ryo (Yusuke Iseya) is a university student closing in on his 21st birthday, but the days leading up to it prove to be both trying and unexpected. A variety of oddball slackers, including Ryo and his pals, cross paths and experience unforeseen turmoil in Japan's cosmopolitan, ever-more amoral underworld. Ryo is entreated to sell a smoke carton full of ecstasy by a Yakuza boss, but he loses the carton and gets high himself. Flummoxed, Ryo and his pals chase the carton to Hell and back, but a variety of individuals, including the Yakuza boss (Susumu Terajima), a below-average policeman, and a kleptomaniac acquaintance get in their way. Ryo's pals have their own issues, from getting dumped to impending fatherhood. And Ryo is still waiting to turn 21! Perhaps inspired by the American film Go, Kakuto is a seductive, wildly entertaining look at Japan's shifting culture and its fabulously aimless youth.
