After School (DVD) (Japan Version) DVD Region 2
YesAsia Editorial Description
Popular actor Ichihara Hayato (All About Lily Chou Chou) takes on dual roles as twins, one a physics student, the other an aimless musician. At his brother's request, wannabe rocker Motokazu steps in to take a physics seminar and befriends bristly prodigy Saraka (Tanimura Mitsuki, Real Oni Gokko). After a hearty class debate over whether it's possible to create a new universe with a particle accelerator, professor Hatomura (Ishida Yuriko) challenges Saraka and hapless partner Motokazu to prove her argument through a special project. Hatomura was thinking more on a theoretical level, but Saraka sets out to end the world.

"God's Puzzle" begins promisingly, but ends a silly mess. Motokazu (Ichihara Hayato) is a budding sushi chef, rock guitarist of dubious skill, and general layabout. When his brilliant physics whiz twin brother leaves Japan to follow his girlfriend, he asks Motokazu to attend his physics class in his stead. Motokazu, of course, is singularly ill-equipped to fill that role. Nonetheless, he attends and there he meets Saraka (Tanimura Mitsuki), a child prodigy of physics. Saraka, unfortunately, has serious emotional problems. She was a test-tube baby who believes her mother specially created her to be a genius, a role she resents and one she feels seals her off from being able to relate to others. She becomes determined to create a new universe (and destroy the world) by hijacking a particle accelerator that she inspired or, failing that, to commit suicide. Hapless Motokazu tries to help Saraka become more normal, but Sarakara appears to have sunk too deeply into her depression. The movie piles implausibility upon implausibility (including the central implausibility that one could create a new universe and destroy the world with a particle accelerator), interrupts the flow with a long of the story with a long physics lecture about the creation of the universe delivered very implausibly by Motokazu, and further interrupts the flow with utterly pointless scenes of Motokazu's twin brother hanging out in India. Its climax, as Saraka seeks to carry out her plan and Motokazu tries to save her ... with bad rock music and wet sushi, is almost laughable. No, I take that back -- it is laughable, but not in a good way. The film's saving grace is Tanimura Mitsuki as the tortured Saraka. It is a nicely controlled performance, showing a veneer of calm covering a battle of inner demons. Too bad the filmmakers of "God's Puzzle" failed to deliver a similarly controlled performance. Their silly, over-the-top ending wastes the nice groundwork they had laid. |
