YesAsia Editorial Description

One of the undisputed masters of Japan cinema, Shimizu Hiroshi (1903-1966) made well over 100 films in his career, ranging from children's films to lighthearted comedies to stories from the fringe. His outstanding cinematic achievements match that of contemporary great and lifelong friend Ozu Yasujiro, though the latter has eclipsed him in recognition. Shimizu is particularly well known for his children's films, such as Children of the Wind (1937), but his steady stream of output for Shochiku from the 1920s to 1950s yielded a far wider selection of films, many of which have been sadly lost to time. In comparison to Ozu's films which are readily available, Shimizu's works have been near impossible to find outside of the festival circuit, but Shochiku is now finally releasing Shimizu's films on DVD.

Based on an Ibuse Masuji short story, the 1941 feature Kanzashi (a.k.a. Ornamental Hairpin) is a delightful escapist drama set at a hot spring resort that provides sanctuary to people of vastly different backgrounds and personalities bounded by one thing: their common desire to not leave. The resort's patrons include a Tokyo woman (Tanaka Kinuyo) with a mysterious past who develops a brief relationship with a wounded soldier (Ryu Chishu). A comedic piece filmed and set during wartime Japan, Kanzashi makes a statement with its lightness.

More than meets the eye Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Kanzashi" (a.k.a. "Ornamental Hairpin") has many things in common with "Mr. Thank You" and "Anmo to Onna", other Shimizu Hiroshi films recently rereleased by Shochiku. All three films feature ensemble casts captured in a transient situation and all three are told in director Shimizu's uniquely suggestive style.

"Kanzashi", like "Anmo to Onna", takes place at a hot springs resort. We are introduced to a small group of people staying at the resort -- a curmudgeonly professor (Saito Tatsuo) with a serious snoring problem, a couple of newlyweds, two young boys, a grandfather, and a convalescing soldier (Chishu Ryu) who suffered a serious foot injury in the war. Through a series of generally light-hearted vignettes, we gain a sense of the personalities of this crew.

While bathing, the soldier cuts his foot by stepping on an ornamental hairpin left by an earlier guest to the spa. The owner of the hairpin (Tanaka Kimuyo) returns to the spa to apologize to the soldier. Based upon an earlier scene, it appears that this woman is a geisha from Tokyo and that she yearns to be free of that life; after apologizing to the soldier, she has no desire to return to Tokyo. Instead, she invests herself in a growing friendship and possible romance with the soldier. However, when the soldier regains the ability to climb a long set of stairs, he plans to return to Tokyo and the war effort.

Will the budding romance end with the soldier's return to Tokyo? Will the geisha return to her old life? As is typical with Shimizu's films, the viewer is left to ponder these questions at the film's lovely closing coda. Shimizu's films do not fill in all the blanks in the story; they leave the viewer to ponder what will become of its characters and what may lie behind their actions. If you think that you might enjoy this kind of cinematic puzzle, then I can recommend "Kanzashi" and the other Shimizu reissues very highly.
