Kekkon Annai Mystery (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Watanabe Ken (Letters from Iwo Jima), in one of his earliest acting roles, stars in the 1985 film Kekkon Annai Mystery. Directed by Matsunaga Yoshikuni, the film is based on a novel by the hugely popular Akagawa Jiro, and takes the audience into the beautiful, foreboding world of the upper echelon through the eyes of a simple girl who stumbles into a wealthy family. Although on the surface everything seems polite and controlled, sinister plans broil underneath in this thrilling and telling story. The film also features Watanabe Noriko (Ninja Wars), one of the biggest starlets of the 1980s.

Nineteen-year-old Hiroko (Watanabe Noriko) works at a small marriage agency. In exchange for some very generous compensation, she agrees to pose as Sekine's (Watanabe Ken) fiancee, and move into his mansion, putting on a show for the family. Swept into the luxurious life of the upper class, Hiroko is so content with her Cinderella fantasy, she doesn't realize that she has been unwittingly pulled into a dangerous family power struggle.

Improbable murder mystery Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
"Kekkon Annai Mystery" is a murder mystery in which the plot complications simply run amuk. A young woman is hired to impersonate the fiance of the son of a very rich family. Why she is asked to do this never makes a lot of sense and how the family expected to get away with this charade is equally unclear. Frankly, this unlikely opening premise had me wondering whether I wanted to stick with the film.

I did, and saw one strange plot twist piled on top of another. The young woman is led to believe that she inadvertently has killed a woman. Then she learns that she really was not the killer. Then she learns that the dead woman was not really dead. Then she learns that someone else actually is dead. After a while, I became intrigued, but the plot twists just kept on coming until the story lost whatever plausibility it had left.

The film appears to have been shot on a low budget, with unimpressive production values. It contains a fairly obvious continuity error in one of its early scenes. I was sufficiently engrossed and entertained to watch the film to the end, but I cannot imagine wanting to see it a second time.
