April 13, 2009 Chan's first directoral filmThis review is for Fearless Hyena 1 and not for #2. I will talk later about # 2. But first, Fearless Hyena: It's the first time Jackie had the freedom to work on a film. The result is impressive for a first film. The story is not very original but for the time ( 1980 ) it was the standar ( revenge/training plot ). Jackie show"s off some great fights and training sequences, plus you get to see him in superb physical condition. The bad guy in this movie is a great kung fu actor, I d'ont remenber his name but he also play with jackie in Dragon fist and also in Jet Li's Once upon a time in china part 1 ( Jet is fighting him at the end with all those ladders. So that's why I give this film a 8 out 10. I highly recommended this film for fans of old school martial arts films.
Now, for Fearless #2, you get to see Jackie only in a few scenes cause he left the company right in the middle of shooting this movie. That's when he went to Golden Harvest and did Young Master. So for the few scenes he is in it's good but 75% of the rest is just a look a like Jackie, plus the story does not make sense. So here it is.

April 13, 2009 period fu films with Jet = AAAJet Li is best cast when he is in period kung fu films. And if you add Yuen Woo Ping to make the action, well your getting what's best in the genre. This film and Ip ma are the two best recent period fu flix since fist of legend and Drunken master 2 ( witch both were released in 1994 ) It's been a long time!!!

April 13, 2009 Donnie Yen at the top of his gameWhat happen when you put the best kung fu actor of the 2000's ( Donnie Yen ) and the legendary Sammo Hung with a great real life story on a Wing chun master: you have what I think is the period kung fu film since 1994's Fist of legend and Drunken Master 2!!! I thought that fearless was good but this one in incredible. The story, acting and the fights are top notch. Can't wait for the sequel with Sammo stepping in front of the camera to fight Donnie.!!!

May 11, 2007 Nice prequel to Heroes twoThis movie is a prequel to Heroes two. To me, Heroes two is a bit better cause of the story. The action is good but lack a bit of emotions. There is three heroes in this film and each one has not enough time to develop his character. But overall, a good kung fu flix for 1974.

Five Superfighters (Hong Kong Version)

May 1, 2007 another classic 1979 Shaw1979 was the best year for kung fu films. It's the year we saw Drunken master, Magnificent Butcher, Dirty Ho, Mad Monkey Kung fu and many others hit the silver screen. So that's wy movies like Monkey kung fu ( ake stroke of death ) and Five super fighter went under the radar. It has training sequences, kung fu every 5 minutes and good performers!!! You have tu buy this one if you are a kung fu fans!! I am not giving it it's full scrore just because the story is not original and the lack of emotion of certain characters.

May 1, 2007 top five classic!!Yes, this movie is in my top five kung fu films of all time. The others are ( no particular order ): Drunken master 2, Legendary weapons of China, Fist of Legend and Magnificent Butcher. Now there's more flix that can be compared to those I just mentioned but Prodigal Son is so well crafted by Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao that you will want to watch this on all your short life!!! # 1 wing chung movie, # 2 Warriors two

(7)Our Price: US$25.49May 1, 2007 King of the early 90'sThis trilogy revive the entire period kung fu genre in the 90's. It was not a easy task but because of the vision of Tsui Hark and the talent of Jet Li it worked. We can even assume that it influence Jackie Chan to produce in 1994 one of his greatess films and also one of the best period/Kung fu film of all time: Drunken master 2. The first film has a solid story and the other two tend to rest more on kung fu action, wich is great !!! This edition has a very good image and bonus but lack the english soundtrack.

May 1, 2007 Chan's last old school actionThis is the first movie made by Jackie Chan. Well, Fearless Hyena was his first direction, but he was still working for Lo Wei and did not have the same freedom he enjoyed with Golden Harvest ( a company owned by Raymond Chow who will later become #1 in Asia in term of action films ). Young Master ressemble a lot of the best stuff he learned with Yuen Woo Ping ( wich he worked with for Snake in eagle shadow and Drunken master). So for kung fu fans it's a great movie. It is also the last old school kung fu film he did (he's last period kung fu film was Drunken master 2 in 1994 ) before moving with action films. Not his best period kung fu but a good one.

April 30, 2007 history in the makingIt' rare the a kung fu flix has good fights, story, training sequences and acting not to mention directing and producing! This one has all of the above. Yes it's old, but it represent exactly what martial arts movie fans expect from old school kung fu flix. Some may prefer the eye candy of the late 70's and early 80's flix but E.F.S will stand the test of time. Chan Koon Tai is a authentic kung fu practioner, so it make the movie credible. Not to mention a young Lau Kar Leung choeregraphing what I believe will never see again in our days: real kung fu backed up by strong values. Water my friend, be like water B.L

The Chinese Boxer
April 29, 2007 Not bad but not a classicI know lots of poeple ( especialy pro. critics ) put this movie in classics category, it's true that at the time it was innovateur but the skill of Jimmy Wang Yu is very poor. He his slow and not very athletic. I still think that The One Armed Swordman is Jimmy best and only good martial arts film ( well Master of the flying guillotine was not bad ).

The Blood Brothers (1973)
April 29, 2007 Great acting, good fightsVery good acting by the two main characters. The story is well written and the fights are good ( sometimes slow cause of David Cheng ability !!). But like I said you'll want this one more fore the acting and story than for the fights. And I know a lot of people who prefer the other way around. So make your choice.

The Five Venoms
April 29, 2007 Deadly!!!This movie is cult classic all the way and it will stay that way for a long time. Compared to Five fingers of death ( aka: King Boxer), the story stays fresh and original. Fights are well choeregraph and all of the cast talent is at it's full potential ( I'm talking about the Venoms of course ).

The Boxer From Shantung

April 29, 2007 one the best final sceneOld school flix with all star cast and crew. There something about the main character and the story that special. The fights are great for the time (early 70's), but the final scene where the main character has to battle close to 60 -80 men at a thea house, is .... what I call vintage cinema. This one is a must even if new audiences will probably find the fights dated.

King Boxer
April 29, 2007 Not bad but not greatThis movie is better known as 5 fingers of death in America and it develop a cult classic status. But it did not aged as well as others. It's early 70's and the kung fu genre just began. So experiments were made. It's good to see Lo Leih as the good guy for once. One for the history of the genre but not quite the classic that some clain it is .

Disciples OF The 36th Chamber
April 29, 2007 farewell Shaw BrothersThis is one the last kung fu movie that came out under the Shaw Brothers label. It's fast, direct, classic and authentic when we talk about kung fu moves in this flix. The actors are in top form. The year is 1984, just before the shooting of Jet Li's Martial arts of Shaolin, Lau Kar Leung and the crew is at the top of their art and it shows.

Lau Kar Leung ( yes, him again ) delivers a great story with a brand new type of kung fu. Gordon Liu has to train in the temple while working on bamboo walls cause the habbot refuse to train a outsider. So he develop, without knowing, a new style that can be resume as: construction tying rope kung fu.............. WoW

April 29, 2007 a classic under the radarYes, this one is sometimes overlooked cause it does not have big name kung fu star but it's a very good movie. Don't forget that it was made in 1979, the pinnacle of the kung fu genre : Drunken Master, Magnificent Butcher, Dirty Ho.... The story is not the most original but the action is great.

Mad Monkey Kung Fu
April 29, 2007 IncredibleOne of the the all time kung fu flix. Lau Kar Leung not only direct but star in this one. When Mr Leung put himself in front of the camera, you have a classic. The energic and acrobatic young actor that play the lead is also something special. Great training sequences. In my top five kung fu movies of all time.

Two Champions Of Shaolin
April 29, 2007 A bit flat for the venomsI was a bit disapointed wen I saw this one. It's not there best effort ( the venoms ) but it's still something to watch for the die hard fans of the Kung Fu genre.
