YesAsia Editorial Description
Hong Kong action hero Yuen Biao (The Prodigal Son) and Shaw Brothers vet Wu Ma (The Shaolin Heroes) team up for the 1993 period actioner Kick Boxer. Wu Ma takes on both directing and acting duties, while Yuen stars as the titular kicker, folk hero "Ghost Leg Seven" Lau Chat, another one of Wong Fei Hung's storied disciples known for his speed and phenomenal kicking. Following the hot-blooded youth of Lau, Kick Boxer makes a good companion piece to Prodigal Son and is definitely worth a watch for fans of Yuen Biao and Wong Fei Hung-themed films. The film also co-stars wily martial artist Yuen Wah (Kung Fu Hustle) and actress Sheila Chan (Her Fatal Ways).
After bringing too many problems to his family, spoiled young Lau Chat (Yuen Biao) gets sent to Po Chi Lam where he becomes Wong Fei Hung's disciple. Young and easily incensed, Lau is quick to defend the weak, but his impulsive actions often lead to trouble. Not only does he get into a fight with foreigners, he gets duped into smuggling opium. With Master Wong away, it's up to Lau to clear his name and bring the true criminals to justice.

Decent film. Poor dvd.
| Good film let down by poor picture quality and even worse sound. At least it's widescreen (although not anamorphic) with subs. |

A Great effort marred by Wu Ma's direction.
|
Wu Ma has never been a great director but thanks to Yuen Biao he has created a fine picture here. Yuen biao plays the famous Club Foot (Wong Fei Hungs student) so he gets to let rip with some swift kicking techniques and he does it easily but he also gets to show of his acrobatic side. Biao is likeable as always and plays the role just fine if not a bit see-it before type. Story wise it is nothing to shout about it has been done in any picture involving Wong Fei Hung about the smuggling of opium, but that does not stop the picture from being any less entertaining because there are many fight scenes interspersed through out the film making it move at a reasonable pace. What does hinder the viewing pleasure is Wu Ma's strange camera movement during some fights but not enough to distract and his choice of shooting in the dark which makes it difficult to see whats going on. The high light is definitely the fight between Biao and Yuen Wah and it is astounding, the only thing that didn't do it for me was the use of fake legs and the use of special effects to indicate that Biao has got a third leg (not literally). |

Yuen Biao's charm
| Yuen Biao's charm blazes through on screen making this a near favorite. The story moves along & progresses understandably with the high flying kicks & acrobatic fights that he is capable of. Enjoyable & collectable for any Yuen Biao fan. This is one that actually has a "feel good" closure to the story so that should make it extra enjoyable. (since any fan would know how dramatic tragedy also seems to be a growing trend of Yuen Biao's) |
