Master filmmaker Tsui Hark produces King of Chess, an unusual, ambitious drama from director Yim Ho (The Day The Sun Turned Cold). Tony Leung Ka Fai stars as the "King of Chess", a renowned chess master during the turbulent years of China's Cultural Revolution. Possessing the ability to predict the future, the King of Chess becomes inundated by outsiders wanting to benefit from his gifts. Alternately, in present day Taiwan, the story of a young chess whiz unfolds. John Sham is a TV producer who's attempting to save the television show "Whiz Kids World" by making the child into a renowned chess king. But could his attempts have a negative impact on the young, impressionable boy? Using two time periods, director Yim Ho and producer Tsui Hark are able to create an offbeat, metaphorical tale about the Chinese people, both past and present. Simultaneously entertaining and profound, King of Chess is a decidedly different, and very worthy Hong Kong film.

丁玉梅是電視臺<<神童世界>>的主持人，因節目收視率日趨下滑而陷入事業危機，遂委託好友程凌幫忙。程凌尋得一位擅長五子棋的小孩王聖方，將其帶回訓練。訓練中，程凌發現王聖方能夠預先感知對方的棋步，這讓他想起了二十多年前他在大陸遇到的一個棋癡，王一生。王一生棋藝高超，卻因出身不好，只能收起對象棋的熱愛，上山下鄉進行勞動改造。後在朋友的鼓勵下參加棋賽。比賽前，卻因為隨手撕掉大字報而被捕入獄。幸得程凌表哥幫忙才能脫險，但因此失去祖傳象棋。王感內疚，決定再不參加比賽，與眾人發生衝突。在棋賽結束後，王卻突然要求與獲勝者下棋，並以一敵九。

Ching, in order to help his friend Yumei Ding out of her ailing TV program, Whiz Kids' World, finds a prodigy Shengfang Wang, who is good at playing chess. He brings him back home and plans to train him. Then he discovers that Wang possesses some strange power which enables him to foretell his adversary's next decision. This reminds Ching of another chess player Yisheng Wang, who he met in Mainland China when he was a child. With a poor family background, Yisheng Wang had to give up his addiction to play chess and accepted different kinds of reforms through labor. With his friend's encouragement, he then decided to take part in a chess match. Unfortunately, he was imprisoned before the match because he tore a big-character poster. With the help of Ching's cousin, who bailed him out from prison with a set of antique chess, Wang was able to join the match. But finally he gave it up and clashed with the other chess players. Now in Taipei, when professor Liu knows that his adversary Shengfang Wang holds the kind of strange power, he kidnaps him in order to achieve his own ambition.
