Kingdom Of Heaven is an epic adventure about a common man who finds himself a stranger in a strange land. Orlando Bloom stars as the simple blacksmith Balian, who struggles to find meaning in his life after suffering a devastating personal tragedy. His wife commits suicide after the death of their baby, which in turn condemns her to a life in purgatory according to Christian doctrine. Balian's simplistic nature cannot cope with this and, in a fit a of fury he murders the priest who has condemned his wife's soul.
It seems that all is lost for him, until a band of knights pass by on their way to fight in the crusades and their leader declares himself to be Balian's father. They convince him that if he joins their "just war" he may yet save his wife's soul. They travel to Jerusalem and Balian develops his fighting and leadership skills, eventually finding himself as defender of the people and close ally to King Baldwin. But complications arise involving his relations with the exotic and forbidden Queen Sibylla and the Knights Templar's reluctance to co-habit with the Muslims in the Holy Land.
Director Ridley Scott's sprawling epic is a visual delight, with almost every shot a work of art in itself. The battle scenes, particularly the climatic siege of Jerusalem, are crammed with detail and thrills, seamlessly meshing real action with computer generated imagery to create an exhilarating action adventure. Scott also attempts to examine the morality of the crusades, exploring the justification behind fighting for one's God and, in doing so, presents a film of intelligence and diplomacy, as well as thrilling entertainment.
