Inspired by the real 1950 burning of Kyoto's famous Golden Pavilion, the novel chronicles a man's slow descent into madness. V6's Morita Go stars as the monk, who is pushed so far beyond his limits by the elements around him that he's forced to do the unthinkable. For his stage production, Miyamoto designs a seemingly simple stage filled with complex effects, including an aggressive lighting design and a climax that involves setting the entire stage on fire. After a one-month engagement in Japan, Miyamoto and the cast were even invited to perform the show at the Lincoln Center in New York City. Now, you can catch the spectacular performance of Kinkakuji on DVD!

丹後の貧しい寺の子として生まれた主人公・溝口 (森田剛)。彼は生来の吃音のため同年代の少年たちともうまく接することができず、その苦しみは母にも理解してもらえない。孤独にもがく彼に病弱な父は「金閣がお前を導いてくださる」とその美しさを聞かせるが、現実の金閣は美しいとは思えないものだった。父の遺志に従い金閣寺の徒弟となった後、溝口は鶴川 (大東俊介)と出会う。初めて自分の存在を認めてくれた彼と輝かしい夏のひとときを過ごすが、やがて鶴川との関係にも影が落ちていく。そんな時、下肢の障害すらも武器に変え不敵に生きる柏木 (高岡蒼甫) に出会い、惹かれていくのだった。
