In 2006, the NTV drama
14 Sai no Haha about a pregnant 14-year-old girl turned into a big hit in Japan for bringing to light the issue of teen pregnancy and portraying its effects on the parents-to-be and their family. Two years later, Saso Akira's manga
Kodomo no Kodomo (a.k.a.
Child by Children) travels to the silver screen with the story of an 11-year-old mother. Despite the potentially controversial premise,
Kodomo no Kodomo is never less than tactful in its portrayal of a young girl who accidentally becomes pregnant. Director Hagiuda Koji follows the emotional journeys of the protagonist and the people around her with the same quiet sensitivity and engaging balance of light and grave seen in his last film,
Shindo. A talented cast that includes Aso Kumiko (
Achilles and the Tortoise), Miyazaki Yoshiko (
Detroit Metal City), Tanimura Mitsuki (
God's Puzzle), Fukami Motoko (
Crows: Episode 0), and Ueno Juri (
Nodame Cantabile) provide adult support for the film's perfectly cast young lead, Amari Haruna.
Newcomer Amari Haruna gives a nuanced and moving performance beyond her years as Kodomo no Kodomo's protagonist, cheerful 11-year-old fifth grader Haruna. One fateful spring day, she and her buddy Hiroyuki (Kawamura Yuya) carry out a seemingly innocent experiment at the park they always play at. It is only after a sex education class that Haruna realizes the significance of their actions - and the fact that she is pregnant.
