Great film of life's changes
|
If anyone has any doubts about the greatness of director Yamada Yoji, then they need to watch this splendid film. "Home From The Sea" especially is a treat for fans of Yamada's Tora-San series because in it we get to see the actors who play Tora, his sister, her husband, and the priest in entirely different roles. Right from the opening scenes of "Home From The Sea", we get to see the sure directorial hand of Yamada. He unfolds the daily rhythms of life for an island family that earns its living from operating a small rock-hauling boat. In an almost wordless fashion, we see the cooperation between the husband and wife running the boat. We see the grandfather at home taking care of the grandchild. We get a flavor of the idyllic life on the island. Then slowly we begin to see the ineluctable forces of economics challenging these rhythms of life. The 19 year old wooden-hulled rock-hauling boat is breaking down and the family lacks the funds to repair or replace it. The task of rock-hauling now is being performed by much bigger steel-hulled ships and it is hard for this small operation to make a go of it. The skipper's brother urges the skipper to leave the boat and take a job in a huge ship-building factory in Hiroshima. The skipper rages against his situation, causing stresses in his family life. Will the stresses tear the family apart? Is there no way to salvage the boat? Will the skipper give up his independent life and agree to become a small cog in the big factory? These are the questions confronted with admirable subtlety by this fine film. Fans of Baisho Chieko definitely will want to see her terrific performance in this film. I recommend "Home From The Sea" very, very highly for a general audience. |
