Beneath the Black Rain

Set a few decades after the bombing of Hiroshima, 'Beneath The Black Rain' (also known as 'Struck By Black Rain') tells the story of several adults who, as children, survived the bombing. Life has been a terrible struggle for them, and has left many of them very angry and bitter in the modern Hiroshima. Based on Keiji Nakazawa's manga which preceded 'Barefoot Gen', and made by the same team who made the Anime version of 'Barefoot Gen', this is a powerful Anime that very much deserves to be seen, and is a worthy companion to 'Barefoot Gen'. We don't often get to see this point of view when learning about the war, and it is important that we do understand the victims' story. As of writing this review (November 2008), to my knowledge there is no English translation, but this film should be seen in English, and hopefully will be sometime in the future. |
