YesAsia Editorial Description

Hong Kong singer-actress Sammi Cheng makes her highly anticipated silver-screen comeback in the kidnapping dramedy Lady Cop & Papa Crook. Appearing in her first film since 2005's Everlasting Regret, Cheng delivers a signature quirky, lovable performance as an eccentric police inspector who's an ace in crimefighting, but at a loss in her relationship with a spastic artist. Singer-actor Eason Chan (The Pye-Dog) co-stars as a mob boss who develops an unlikely alliance with Cheng. Frequent collaborators whose previous films include blockbusters Infernal Affairs, Confession Pain, and Initial D, writer-directors Alan Mak and Felix Chong deftly balance crime and comedy elements, making Lady Cop & Papa Crook an entertaining mix of police suspense, triad action, and wry Hong Kong humor. The film also gets impressive mileage from a supporting cast of cops and criminals that includes Chapman To (Trivial Matters), Patrick Tam (Beast Cops), Zhang Guoli (Telephone 601), Michelle Yip (Moonlight in Tokyo), Kate Tsui (Eye in the Sky), Richie Jen (Exiled), Ricky Chan (Confession of Pain), Liu Kai Chi, singer Wilfred Lau, and Conroy Chan (The Heavenly Kings).

World-weary family man John Fok (Eason Chan) is a loving father and the head of a crime organization whose main operation involves smuggling diesel from China to Hong Kong. He's forced to put business on hold after a Mainland police sting results in massive losses and multiple deaths. While he's laying low, rival triads, squabbling relatives, and police on both sides of the border begin making their moves, but Fok isn't about to take things sitting down. When his son is kidnapped, however, he has no choice but to welcome quirky, straight-talking Inspector Maureen Szeto (Sammi Cheng) into his home. To save Fok's son, the cops and the crooks will have to work together, but first they have to stop fighting each other.

Product Information

Director: Mak Siu Fai, Chong Men Keung

John Fok (Eason Chan) is the kingpin of illegal red oil in Greater China. When an oil tanker explodes accidentally, he becomes the focus of investigation by Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese police and is forced to halt his business to wait things out. While his business rivals start closing in, a member of his household is planning to betray him. On the surface, John seems totally helpless, but in reality, he's been staging a major comeback for months. Just as he is finally ready to turn his fortune around, however, his only son is kidnapped!

Senior Inspector Molline Szeto (Sammi Cheng) is the rising star in the police force, who is well praised for busting crime with her characteristic sangfroid and precision. However, in matters of love, she is totally at wit's end. After dating the same man for more than ten years with no likely prospect of an imminent wedding, she determines to cut the knot once and for all, before she becomes too old for childbirth. Poised at the crossroad of her life, she is thrilled to be assigned to investigate the kidnap of John's son.

John dispatches his whole gang to ferret out his son's whereabouts, only to find out that his rivals are redeploying people in China to assail him. Just when he is about to order an all-out fightback, Molline suddenly arrives with her team to garrison at his house. Spurning her at first, he soon finds her critical analysis of the situation at hand both apt and useful. An unlikely cooperation between cops and crooks thus ensues, leading to conflicts and clashes galore at every step till the very end.

Professional Review of "Lady Cop & Papa Crook (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)"

March 9, 2009

This professional review refers to Lady Cop & Papa Crook (DVD) (Director's Cut) (Hong Kong Version)
Lady Cop and Papa Crook is a film which has attracted publicity for all the wrong reasons, having been delayed after a battle with the notoriously strict Chinese censors. This is a shame, and it is great to see the film finally emerge, as it offers fans of Hong Kong cinema plenty to get excited about, marking as it does the return to screens of popular singer-actress Sammi Cheng in her first role since 2005's less than successful Everlasting Regret. Here, she teams with another A-list talent in the form of Eason Chan (who recently impressed in low-key gangster drama The Pye-Dog) along with a whole host of notable co-stars including the likes of Chapman To (Trivial Matters), Patrick Tam (best known for his role in the excellent Beast Cops) and Mainland actor Zhang Guoli (Telephone 601). The film was co-written and directed by Alan Mak and Felix Chong of Infernal Affairs and Confession of Pain fame, adding to its considerable pedigree.

The film follows Chan as John Fok, a somewhat jaded gang boss involved in smuggling petrol from the Mainland to Hong Kong. Unfortunately, his business is threatened after a police operation results in a fatal accident and the loss of his goods. Before he can react and try to deal with the situation, his young son is kidnapped, forcing him to bring in the police. Enter Cheng as Inspector Maureen Szeto, a woman with problems of her own, the most pressing of which is the fact that her long-time boyfriend seems unwilling to marry her and may be carrying on an affair. She and Fok are soon butting heads over the case, with their various men at each other's throats, something they have to find a way to solve if they are ever going to rescue his son.

There's no denying that Lady Cop and Papa Crook is a somewhat chaotic affair, jumping as it does between domestic farce, kidnapping drama and hard edged triad action. Still, this is pretty much par for the course when it comes to Hong Kong cinema, and although the plot is a little confusing in places, the film is arguably none the worse from it. It's worth noting that the DVD features the longer director's cut, which does go some way to readdressing the disorienting cuts made by the censors, and which comes with an alternate and far more satisfying ending. The film to an extent defies expectations, both in that it refuses to play out as a straight crime caper and in that the relationship between Cheng and Chan's characters never blossoms into romance, developing from distrust to grudging acceptance. Instead the film concentrates on some intriguing themes, such as the co-operation between the police and the triads, and tries to show the different sides learning from each other, in particular Chan's gang boss who grows somewhat as a person in the process. These aspects of the film, along with a subtle theme of Mainland police incompetence, although perhaps somewhat diluted by the censors, who were no doubt aghast at the prospect of sympathetic police and gang relations, help to make it stand out from the crowd and to lend the proceedings a certain thoughtfulness.

Playing off against such concerns is the film's wacky vein of humour, which mainly revolves around Cheng and her relationship worries. Fans of the actress will be pleased to hear that the film sees her return to the kind of cute aggressive persona she became known for, and spends most of the film nagging or pouting, generally to amusing effect. These and the other slapstick gags are somewhat at odds with some of the film's more brutal and violent moments, but work well to keep the viewer entertained, if a little bewildered at times. As such, the film is more Confession of Pain than Infernal Affairs though the lack of coherence does not prevent the viewer from being engaged, if in the plot and themes more so than in the characters themselves. Things come together towards the end when the comedy drops into the background, making for a suitably tense finale. Mak and Chong's direction is tight throughout, with some inventive editing and stylish visuals that help to give the film a big budget, glossy sheen.

As such, Lady Cop and Papa Crook certainly delivers as an enjoyable slice of popcorn entertainment, especially for fans of Sammi Cheng. Although somewhat uneven, it benefits from taking a less obvious path, and is arguably all the better for being less straightforward than might have been expected.

Could be Better Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
The pace of this movie seemed promising at first. It seemed to be leading to a climax, but just abruptly ended as if it was rushed. The mastermind crooks were suddenly apprehended by police. There was no struggle, no twist, no brains in that. Sammi Cheng is a good actress but this movie could have just eliminated some of her PMS scenes and focused more on a better plot.

Sammi steals the show! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Lady Cop & Papa Crook" might just be Sammi Cheng's greatest acting performance. She plays police detective Maureen Szeto who is given the complicated assignment of seeking to recover the kidnapped child of crime boss John Fok (Eason Chan) while at the same time trying to bring down his criminal enterprise. Maureen sets up operations in Fok's home and keeps Fok and several of his top henchman under house arrest. Patience wears thin and tempers flare as gang members and cops clash under the same roof while the hunt for Fok's son unfolds. Sammi is absolutely brilliant as the brash, impulsive, whipsmart detective, who unfortunately is distracted in her duties by her trainwreck of a private life. Eason Chan and Chapman To also contribute fine performances and the intricately plotted film never fails to grip the viewer. The English subtitles occasionally make it difficult to follow the elaborate plot, but Sammi's scenery-chewing star power kept me on the edge of my seat. Very highly recommended.
