Produced and directed by Shin Sang Ok, the 1972 period drama Lady of the Court is a story of succession struggle and palace intrigue during Joseon era Korea. After King Myeong Jong passes away, his son rises to the throne. The late king's concubines are to be expelled from the palace but one of them, Bok Nyo, claims to be pregnant with the late king's child. The new king's detractors, including the empress dowager, support Bok Nyo's child for the position of crown prince. Unrest soon breaks out in the palace as alliances form and treachery unfolds, throwing Bok Nyo and her child's real father into danger.

In a career spanning over half a century, legendary Korean filmmaker Shin Sang Ok directed over 70 films and produced over 100 more. A driving force of Korean cinema during the 1950s and 1960s, his production company Shin Films put out hundreds of films during this period, helping to forge the industry's Golden Age. Shin also formed a partnership with Hong Kong's Shaw Brothers studio in the 1960s, opening new doors for both industries with massive co-productions. In recognition of the master filmmaker's contributions to Korean film, he was posthumously awarded the Gold Crown Cultural Medal, the country's highest honor for an artist.

줄거리
이조시대 명종은 세자를 남기고 세상을 떠난다. 그의 3명의 후궁들은 궁궐로부터 쫓겨나게 되고 그중 하나가 복녀였다. 가난에서 벗어나기 위해 명종의 시녀로 궁궐에 들어갔을 때는 그녀는 이미 임신한지 1주일이 되는 때였다. 왕이 죽었을 때 대비는 새로운 왕이 탐탁치 않아 자신의 권력을 유지하기 위해 복녀의 새아기를 세자의 자리에 올린다. 복녀가 다시 궁궐로 돌아온 후 그녀는 진실을 대비의 심복 시중들에게 고백한다. 그러다 간신들의 모함으로 위기에 처한다. 복녀의 남편이며 아기의 아버지인 병철이 간신들로부터 그들을 구해낸다.
