　　蔡伯喈（文千歲）與妻子趙五娘（汪明荃）新婚兩月，情意綿綿，老父卻逼他進京赴考。伯喈才學出眾，高中狀元，為當朝丞相牛太師賞識，欲招為乘龍快婿，伯喈力辭不果，終被逼入贅牛府，從此鬱鬱不歡。
　　此時伯喈家鄉遇上旱災，百姓生活困苦，五娘四處求乞，討得米飯讓姑充饑，自己卻暗�堨H糟糠裹腹。惜翁姑終禁不住磨難，相繼去世，五娘無以為殮，逼於剪下青絲，在街頭乞賣，為翁姑籌措殮葬費用。
　　孑然一身，五娘遂決定上京尋夫，沿路背起琵琶賣唱。幾經辛苦，五娘終於到達京師，卻驚聞伯喈入贅牛府的噩耗……

註：由於母帶已製作經年，故在製作VCD的過程中，必須進行調色、重新配樂及剪輯等後期工作。但所有後期工作均在有必要的情況下進行，並以不影響劇情為原則。
