戰後的台灣百業蕭條，家境貧困的文龍，一心追求小喇叭的吹奏技藝，離鄉背井隨著歌仔戲劇團在各地演出。女班主碧霞對他頗有好感，十分器重。文龍閒暇時在茶室邂逅了彩雲，短短數日的相處，對彼此留下了良好印象。後年，他發現身患肺病，只好返鄉休養。當文龍身體好轉時，改吹薩克斯風並重回碧霞的劇團，為她做事的玉秀長得娉婷玉立，兩人相處，日久生情，結為夫妻。婚後，文龍宿疾復發，無法工作，只能離開日趨沒落的歌仔戲劇團，重回沙河鎮。他到酒家走唱時重遇彩雲，兩人情投意合，進而同居。一日，妻子玉秀來電，文龍前往都市的醫院探視，她表示病癒後將回沙河鎮。彩雲知悉此事後，即離開沙河鎮不知去向；文龍肺病轉劇，抱憾離開人間。
Bun-liong is a destitute young man who pursues his dream of being a professional musician in Taiwan where has just been through World War II. He leaves his native place for his dream and during the journey, he meets three women in his life. They represent three very different yet typical types of fem ales for the era in Taiwan. The whole film is composed with alternate scenes between the past and the present, and highlighted with colorful excerpts of traditional Taiwanese opera.
