Great till the end
Great till the end

Movie was pretty good till the end and it wasn't about how cliche it ended but they really didn't need to end it that way!!! I was kind of confused about the story line, it wasn't really clear until i read what the movie was actually about. The acting was great though and it was interesting how this movie was set in quite before. Was my first China-gay themed movie so was definitely something new for me. Generally the movie wasn't as great as other gay themed movies like Eternal Summer, but it did was it's something definitely to watch. |

A Good Simple Movie
A Good Simple Movie

I admit that Lan Yu is one of the most important works from director Stanley Kwan. Compared to other gay movies; indeed, it isn't as great as The Wedding Banquet and it isn't as complicated as Eternal Summer or Bishonen. But...this Mainland China's production is succeed to take away audience's attention from other movies in the same genre. Lan Yu comes to us with its own color, its own characteristic. The plot, although is very simple, is still up-to-date. Then, the soundtrack (taken from a hit old song in 1990s) still has a power to "move" audience's feeling. And finally, the ending which is similar to those of many Taiwanese movies around 1970s, well...an old-fashion ending (I think), is still effective to break audience's heart. And how about the performance of main actors? Hu Jun play quite well as Shandong. Liu Ye as Lanyu even acts better! But I wonder if Liu Ye has a more "charming" face, the movie would be more nice :-) |

I love the movie and hate the ending of the character played by Liu Ye. He deserved so much better. I don't get the moral of the story. So many Chinese movies always end up sacrificing the nicest person(people) who really deserved to have a happy ending in order to win a few tears from us. Let's have more "feel good" movies. Let the poor and good hearted people win for a change regardless their sexual orientations. The movie however is brave in its portrayal of the gay love affair. Both actors were excellent. Liu Ye was absolutely wonderful as usual. |

The story is really good but it has a very depressing ending. The story tend to have some sexual theme where some people may want to skip but I must say try not to skip it because every word is improtant to up build the story. I do agree it should be translated in to English but the translation must be precise and accurate. I really like to see that people read and enjoy the story where the movie didn't show, but the movie is good also. Have tissue ready when you go towards the end. Really like to hear what other people think about the book. Enjoy |

Wow

I was amazed how powerful the movie was to me. I unexpectedly cried, which I'm a joke how insensitive I am. I watched the second time the day later to see if it was a fluke, nope I cried again. I liked how artistic the movie was with its cinematography. It's a must watch! :D |

For Theo
|
This movie is not about being gay chinese, but reflects the sensitivity of human being. Also, this movie shown the conservativism of gay asian cultures. I've heard alot of great comments from people who watched the movie and people which Mandarin isn't their first language. This movie was shown on the popular gay film festival as well. Theo, Get a Life! and dont live your life like complete queer as folks (regardless U.S. or U.K. version)!! |

Best Movie I ever seen
|
This movie shows lots of aspect of life. The story keeps hinting what life was about, like you can't take things for granted. It also explains what death was about. Death doesn't mean everything will be gone, it leaves you memories and love. |

a must see, must buy

The movie isn't advocating or judging homosexuality. It shows what is needed it make a relationship last- forgiveness and that you should never take it for granted because you could lose it. The actors portrayed this excellently. I watched it over and over again and recently saw it released in the Quad, NYC. |
