Fuji TV's festival favorite
|
Inspired by Wham!'s classic holiday anthem Last Christmas, Fuji TV's 2004 drama of the same name captured the original's lyrical presentation of bittersweet romance, catchy tune, and festive mood in a neatly wrapped package that viewers can easily groove to. Oda Yuji (Bayside Shakedown) had established his J-drama king status with Tokyo Love Story 13 years earlier. Last Christmas marked his return to the Gekku prime timeslot alongside producer Ota Toru and screenwriter Sakamoto Yuji. Like in Tokyo Love Story, Oda plays an executive at the Heart Sports company, specializing in winter sports equipment this time. Kenji (Oda Yuji) is still nursing his wound after being dumped by his fiancee. One day, a girl named Yuki (Yada Akiko) moves in next door, and she happens to be the new secretary of the company, as well as the love interest of Kenji's boss and buddy, Goro (Ihara Tsuyoshi). Kenji finds out to his dismay that his new neighbor, while looking all innocent and well mannered, is actually a member of a biker gang. There's more secrets to her, as Kenji soon learns that she suffered from some sort of serious sickness and got divorced a few years back. Like most romantic comedy couples, Kenji and Yuki start out bickering and clashing constantly, and as they get to know each other over time, feelings gradually build up between them. When they have a bet on who will find a lover first (the loser has to pay for the winning pair's trip to see aurora in a Canadian town), the door between them is already open for them to walk into each other's heart. Kenji and Yuki are surrounded by a number of supporting characters in several interconnected side stories. Kenji's coworker Tappei (Moriyama Mirai) vies with Goro for the heart of the company's "love terrorist" Ayaka (Megumi). Yuki has a crush on the handsome creative consultant Naoya (rising star Tamaki Hiroshi), whose love for the gorgeous designer Ritsuko (Katase Nana) is sadly unrequited. Kenji's college sweetheart Sally (Ryo), now a famous DJ, still can't forget him, even though she's married. And then there's Yuki's doctor who guards her secret. Kenji's heartbreaker, Hitomi (Sakurai Sachiko), comes back hoping to rekindle the old flame, and even Kenji's bedridden mother has found a surprise suitor. See, love is everywhere, like it's the only thing that matters - and that's why we love these dramas so much! Putting beautiful actors in ordinary people roles also gives viewers a temporary way out of their mundane lives. Being the central figure of the story, Oda brings a charismatic presence to the role of Kenji, making him a great match for the cute-as-a-button Yuki, despite their age difference. Oda also contributes the theme song Last Christmas and another Wham! cover Wake Me Up Go! Go! to maintain a joyous spirit. Despite the Yuletide theme, this drama is an enjoyable watch any time of the year. That is, unless one doesn't like an 80s pop music soundtrack, snowy New Zealand landscape, a funny tribute to Titanic, hilarious antics and puns from Ihara, tearjerking terminal illness melodrama, a heartwarming finale, and Oda's irresistible big grin. |

Perfect Christmas

"Last Christmas" is a great television drama to watch any time of the year. It stars Yada Akiko (Yuki Aoi) and Oda Yuji (Kenji) as co-workers who work at a sporting goods manufacturing company and they are neighbors living in the same building, their apartments are right next to each other. And in their apartments, there is one single door - that is a direct entrance to each other's apartment. Kenji is used to seeing Yuki looking professional and having good manners. But one day he sees a photo of her on a motorcycle with a bunch of bad looking girls, all dressed in black leather and wearing heavy make-up. After discovering this, he looks at Yuki in a totally different light. But as Kenji gets to know more about Yuki, he starts to fall in love with her. And he realizes that she is not the person that he saw in that photograph. "Last Christmas" is a beautiful love story about two people who think they are total opposites, later become friends and then partners. No matter what, they go through good and tough times together. |
